Radio control
« on: November 09, 2012, 03:36:55 pm »

Hi all, here is a way of saving a few quid.Instead of buying a new two channel radio for each model, buy your
wife some chocolates in a clear plastic box,you know the ones (f..../r........),and within an hour you will have
a nice box you can cut down to fit a three servo mount.Put two servos in so that they stick out of the top,fit the t/x in the remaining
slot, and if you get it right there,s enough room to put the battery in one end. Then fit the switch in the servo tray and bend a short length
of brass wire through the switch and out through the side of the box.I have made two of these one for myself and one for a friend.Once
made you can fit them to a number of models, thus making your one radio fit many models, both sail (which l use mine for),or by swapping one servo for an e s c for power models.
Please see photo,s,and if you want to try it l will do my best to help.Clive. 8) :-))

Very tidy, swap out one servo for a speed control and use it in a number of powered models instead.

Reminds me of the old Futaba 'brick' which used to be available.

Until the day when you turn up at the lake with your boats and no radio box as its in the one boat you left at home  :embarrassed:

Or like a member of a club I was in who had a similar idea. Set sail with it  in the first boat and promptly sank it in the deepest part of the lake :(( :((

It was a small tug and string of barges. He sailed into some rough water and I think the barges filled and capsized dragging the tug down with it. It was of course in the deepest part of the lake - 16 feet or so. There was nothing wrong with the equipment, but it was never recovered.

Thanks for reply Barriew,l also have a tid tug with a barge, its a Vic smeed tiddler with a home built barge full of mahogany timber, which is a bit of a worry on rough water.
This is of course a problem in full size, where if the barge starts to sink, quick action with an axe may save the day,our problem is the lack of scale hero,s.
The moral of this story is to try not to get pulled under by your own deadweight.

I don't know the size of the tugs you're talking about, but would a small electro magnet solve the problem? I've bought some for a different purpose and they are small and seem quite strong, activate a micro switch via servo, power switches off and the tugs free to get to safety?

Yes of course Bikerdude999,you are right,as long as the model is not too small or the magnet too big or too strong, as l have said l have not had a problem myself.
I believe a proper check of the conditions at the pond is the way to go.Clive 8)

I'd tend to a simpler option of a spring catch on the towing hook that will hold a little more than the bollard pull of the tug. That means it will work even if you aren't looking, cos you can bet that Murphy will be lurking nearby on such occasions :)
