H.m.s Charybdis (1859)
« on: November 26, 2012, 10:41:12 pm »

Hi I have recently acquired a very large and very old model of hms Charybdis the 1859 steam and sale version. The model is 8ft long and approximately 150 years old. It's a bit of a barn find and I currently have it in work, north Kent area. The model does need repaire as you can guess but is mostly there. My question to anyone who can help is what should I do with it? Thanks Julian

Hi Julian.....that question poses other questions and has many answers.
The main question is......what is it made from ( most probably plank on frame or bread and butter construction)......and at a size of 8' very heavy.......
and what do you want to do with it...........will it be a static display model or do you intend sailing the model.
if the latter, then you need to think very very carefully about it as it is so old and most likely a model that will not have been treated with modern preservatives to protect it from water.
you will need to  find someone locally who can have a look at the model and it's timbers and then to make your dscisions on what you want to do with it from there.
However, if your model is 150 years old, I would certainly make yourself and your model known to Chatham Maritime museum where she was built and discuss the model with them......... as it could be a builders model circa of the time..........and as such could be incredibly valuable moneterially..........and I mean valuable with a big V..I'm sure they would be very interested in her.

What ever you do though, is do not touch it until you have sought professional advice as to it's authenticity, and for that I would contact a gentleman who has his own auction and valuation business, and was once a partner with Christies of London...he can be found here and will give you an honest appraisal as to what you might have....   http://www.charlesmillerltd.com/

would love to see some pictures of her though.good luck

I'd get in touch with  the Historic Dockyard at Chatham then and tell them what you have..........see what they have to say.But DON'T  let it out of your possesion.........museums have a habit of taking donations and then they never see the light of day ever again.

As you can guess I feel I've been chucked in the deep end with this. If I get chance tomorrow I'll try and get some photos of her under all the dust

I think it would be of great interest to a lot of people if you were to post a few nice close up photos, Julian.

you really do need to get help from professionals on this,
Historically this could be one of the most important finds for years.......if it is circa 1860 build as you say then it is probably as close to being a builders model as could be.........and probably the ONLY FACTUAL  account in 3D of the original vessel, as plans and contemprory photographs just can't give the same detail.
It would be criminal to let an amateur ham loose on the model.
If you can't get hold of the Historic Dockyard at Chatham as I believe they are now closed for winter and on skeleton staff, then phone the National Maritime museum and ask for Simon Stevens, who although has great knowledge in lifeboats, is also a senior curator of the Museum, and tell him what you have.
Don't mess with it, don't give it on to another modeller for them to adulterate, and certainly don't put it near water from what I can see......it needs preserving for national history!

I'll see if I can get the curator's direct email. Even though the dockyard is shut for the winter, there are still people about (us for example... %% )

Hi Neil thanks for the contact at the auction house in London I spoke to him today. He said it was most likely a training model from the dockyard and wants me to send him photos. When I lifted the decks up I found it had corridors and a load of little wooden benches also in the dust and smaller bits was a ticket from Maidstone library and museum form 1920. I will get some pics up to London then contact the guy at Chatham dockyard lance gave me. Will keep you informed thanks again Julian

I'd be most interested, Julian......please keep me informed............it certainly deserves a place in history and needs to be preserved sympathetically.

Hi Neil your man in London came back today after seeing the photos, he's pretty shore it's an original training model from the time the ship was built. He suggested that I don't touch it and put it in his auction as is, he didn't seem fazed by the damage and said he's not surprised because of the size of her. Unfortunately the next action isn't until May next year and because of the size there's £150 handling fee but he did think he could sell her for a sensible price as the last one he had went for £3000 but it was older and in slightly better condition. I'll get in contact with Chatham dockyard to see if there interested as I do need to do something as she's stuck at work and I don't have the room to get her home. Thanks for your help again and if you come across someone who wants a classic project let me know I'd still really love to see her done!

Just found this picture in an old book called The Royal Navy in Old Photographs by Wilfrid Pym Trotter.

Not quite the same thing but you can see why they needed the proper training aids as they have had to adapt a ships boat to assist.

Thanks for the pics can just imagine how good she'd look restored!
Sorry to say I've run out of time and she's got to go, other half said I had two choices. The boat
Goes or me and the boat! Lol just haven't got the room and work want it out the way. The action house who wanted to put her on their listings doesn't have another action till May next year so sad to say she's gone on eBay! Would still love to see her all done.

Hi Julian
Just wondering what happened. Didn't see her on ebay.
Any more pictures, especially of the interior sections, would be appreciated. I do hope she finds a good home.
