Looking for a Stuart 10V?
« on: December 02, 2012, 05:51:46 pm »

If you are, this might be worth a look - seems too good a price to ignore!

Of course we only have the seller's assurance that it's good quality.  Even so seems a potential bargain if you are in the market for one - unfortunately I'm not!   <:(

Greg,
I am always a bit suspicious of these great bargains of steam engines when the builder quotes.

(STUART TURNER 10V
Reducing my collection. I have built nearly all the steam engines in the Stuart range and I am now reducing some of my models. Built to the highest standard a 10V  only tested on air, will run on just a couple of pounds air pressure or great power on 60lb steam. The engine is 6" High.

Never been run on steam means that when you do run it on steam it spews steam all over the place due to a lack of gaskets and has possibly been sitting an a shelf for years and all the packing and gaskets have dried out and  and how does the builder know it has such power under steam if it has never been steamed.

So  caution should be the watch word.

George.

Yes, I guess we should all remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!  Since a set of machined castings for a 10V are currently advertised at over £400 inc VAT an assembled engine for under £200 does seem a little odd.

Hi Greg,

Having built a 10V along with a few other steam engines there's not a lot that can go wrong with the 10V assuming it has been built properly in the first place.

Gaskets and gland packings are easily replaced. There could be a problem if the piston or piston rings (if fitted) are cast iron and have rusted in the cast iron cylinder, WD40 and gentle tapping could solve that. The other area that may be out is the valve setting but again the 10V has an inside admission slide valve that's not hard to set.

They are a nice engine and fun to build. ok2
