Universal joint or what?.
« on: December 04, 2012, 06:05:11 pm »

I am putting a Brushless Motor and ESC in a 48" MTB, I am wondering whether to make a universal joint between the Prop Shaft and the Motor or can I use a solid connector. I have a Lathe and can do simple tasks on it.
Pease feel free to give me your thoughts.
Thanks.

Must be nice to have an excuse to use your lathe Len  O0
I do keep thinking about buying one but space is also an issue.

Before you jump into the whole world of universal joints and suido universal joints you may want to read this thread through. Created some interesting discussion on "universal and flexible couplings" in Engineering Techniques and Materials.

P.S.

 Martin:

How come I can't cut and past the link from the above thread to this entry.

Thanks

Hi Jon, is it a straight affair with a thread for the Prop shaft at one end and a plain hole with a grub screw to hold the Motor at the other end?.  A photo would be nice.

I have on a Tug a coupling, I forget where I bought it, it has 2 Brass sections one for Motor also Prop shaft with a rubber tube to connect ( looks like LPG hose that you get on Gas bottles ) and a thin brass sheer pins.

Regards,

Len.

The tug one you desribe will be from Mobile Marine Models or Marks Model Bits. The brass wire acts as a shear pin if the prop is fouled.

I bought quite a bit of stuff from MMM at the show (fancied trying a Tosher) including that coupling. But I'm now thinking I don't like the coupling - partly because the tubing was rolled at some time and you can see the curvature even in such a short bit. I have no complaint with MMM it's just me changing my mind.

Oh the MMM is clear tubing, don't know about MMB's

Place it in Boiling Water with a pencil or something inside it then immerse in cold water immediatly and it will become straight,

With both of them it depends on which version you bought. Light duty are clear heavy duty are not! I have not found any problem even with the curvature ok2
