For those of you who are now bored with the offerings on the tv , and arent too far from chichester ( west sussex ) , THIS SUNDAY 30TH 12/12 we are having our second meander along the canal with our model boats , this event is FREE TO PARTICIPATE and open for all electric or sail powered craft , on site rescue / recovery of models which havnt quite lasted the distance is kindly being covered by a member of the portsmouth display team in one of their MANNED BATTLESHIPS , hopefully a little warmer inside than an open canoe ! ive checked the weather forecast , sun and possible cloud , with a possibility of around 20mph wind , SO IF YOUR in the area why not come and join us , walk off all those mince pies and turkey sarnies you ate last week ? / we are meeting at the canal wharf basin in chichester at 1100 hrs , boats shall be leaving by 1200hrs . regards jon

thank you to those modellers who turned out this morning , of the eight participants my own bantam tug decided it wouldnt play , seven models left the main basin just after 1230hrs for our amble along the canal down to the footbridge at hunston and back again , , of the seven that left the basin under their own power four returned , including the over one hundred year old pre dreadnought battleship owned by a member of the chichester model boat club . jon

the event was enjoyed by those who came , im now tring to organise the next trip , which should be sometime around easter , when the weather will hopefully be a little warmer !

The day dawned cool, not cold, breezy but not wet. Typical day out for boat modellers really.
I had prepared my CHANT Tanker Averity for the challenge, learning from the last run, she was carrying an extra 12v 7amp gel battery, and a 'get me home if it all goes wrong' 7.2v 5100mah NiMh.

The Display Team had provided a Manned Battleship at the eleventh hour, as a standby rescue boat. these carry a 12v 110aHr leisure battery, more likely to be found in a caravan than a battleship, and have the legs for the trip, as well as providing an on the spot rescue capability if needed...as long as they dont get stuck of course.

First at the old swing bridge was the Averity and the newly refurbished Coaster, the rest of the fleet followed, including a Fast Electric and the star of the show, a four funnelled british cruiser, the model is over 100 years old and survived a sinking in the basin at Chichester only last year. Originally steam powered, the model has sustained a bit of damage over the last season and is, I am told, due a refit and refurb in the next few months.

We said good bye to Chichester Cathedral as HMS Canopus passed the swing bridge, and the fleet headed south to the A27 bridge and open countryside.

Following a noisy transit under the A27 Bridge, fog horns, klaxons etc to keep the fish from biting, we entered proper canal territory. The width opened out and we were surrounded by trees on both sides. The next significant point of navigation on the canal is the turn to the south east at about 300 yards from the bridge. All going well at this point, however the fleet has strung itself out over a couple of hundred yards. Me, my camera and the CHANT took up the position of tail end charlie in the RC fleet, with only Canopus, the manned battleship behind me.

The conditions were a little wet under foot, as water ran off from the adjacent fields and into the canal.

As we passed the turn to the south east, the canal opened out in front of us. We old hands shrugged this off, not so sure about our latest recruits to the undertaking though!

Jon, in the flourescent jacket, and his mate (whose name I keep forgetting, there is too much going on upstairs

), looking jolly chirpy. Not sure what Jon is looking so happy about, second canal run and still no boat getting past the start line. Maybe next time we will add a bit of variety and see how far we can tow his model up and back down the canal?

The Springer and barges were getting a bit slower and had fallen to the back of the fleet, so I slowed down and stuck with him in case of any problems.

Essential fashion gear for a canal run. Our operators of the vintage four funnel cruiser and the little fast electric, spent most of the time at the front of the fleet.
