Lifeboat crew Kit
« on: January 12, 2013, 01:21:10 am »

Hi does anybody have some pictures of what uniform and gear the lifeboat crew wore in 1936 as my wife is trying to make a kit for one of my model men.

Thanks John

Not full body pics but they give an idea.

If you google [RNLI 1936] there are links to youtube video. There are possible other Pathe films from the era that might show gear. Sorry i cannot view youtube in China, I don't know if the links can help.

There is also an RNLI image archive.

What type of boat is this for? it might give an indication as to the conditions they would have to face. One thing to remember is that a Lifeboatman would only have worn his full wet weather gear in the worst imaginable conditions - or a publicity photo, like this one. Full gear through the early 20th century was black Oilskin coat, trousers and hat, thick black boots and a kapok lifejacket. If the weather wasn't too bad though, they would probably just have normal clothes and the lifejacket. Occasionally the crewman's role was written on his jacket.

And a close up of the jacket:

Surf boats probably wouldn't have been used in particularly bad conditions, so the crew probably just wore normal 30s clothes, so jumpers and flat caps all round!  :-))

There's a row of original Kapok lifejackets alongside the Surf Class 'Thomas Kirk Wright' in the Poole Museum, have some photos if they're of use to you, or anyone else?

Argh if only I could upload pictures from the iPad.

I was at the war and peace show and was wearing the old gear we had on loan form the museum. It was hot and awkward.

Brown cork jackets with yellow oil skins, and the big oil skin floppy hat.
