They are a great little tool.  Unfortunately the handle does not seem  'man enough'  to be gripped securely.

Is there any adaption to make it more  gripable ?

Ken

There was a chap advertising in a model railway magazine a while back who did "easygrip" scalpel handles. Was basically a custom handle for swan morton blades.  I'll look it up for you

A lot of people in the 'States' seem to be using that "Sugra" stuff for moulding plastic handles and the like....

The originals are ridiculously thin and not designed for any force.  It's probably because you don't need it when cutting skin.

sort of... it more like a soft rubbery substance that stays soft and flexible when it goes off. Or at least what the website says
I have just ordered a sampler pack so will report back.....

Post us some pictures.

As an aside, the blades are difficult to change  (and frightening) so what is the secret  'twist and turn'  movement please ?

lift the back edge of the blade where it meets handle and pull - a pair of pliers makes it safer.

Scalpels are for cutting Not carving. If you have a stronger grip, it allows you to sever digits rather than cut them. Don't try to cut through on one pass. Scalpel blades are easy to break and the attendent "Ping" doesn't tell you which way to duck.

Use scalpels all day/every day, I buy them with rubber covers on the handles.

I just came across a homemade Sugra substitute, made from silicone and cornstarch.

If you want to Google it, it's called "Sugru".
Plenty of good ideas on the site for what you can do with it.

Failing to use plastic bags for lead shot when trial ballasting with loose shot and external keel weight lead strips.

After getting the waterline just right in the bath you realise that you now have to properly affix the lead strips (instead of temporary duct tape), and this means turning the hull upside down !

On the subject of scapels, I use all Xacto handles or Excel, I cant get on with swan mortons ever since one broke and decided to deposit a large amount of blade into the back of my hand.. the exacto / excel handles are more like a large pen and I find you get far more control on them !  On the subject of things not to do - dont balance a paint pot on your model whilst your painting and then knock it off all down the front of the windows..... major mess... took ages to sort it out.. !

One thing I discovered you shouldn't do is... polish your paintwork with your spectacles cloth dipped in white spirit... I don't know why, but the paintwork goes matt !!
