I finally have time to get going on a project I've delayed for years. Adding the mast, sails and rigging to a model boat my Great Grandfather built ago in Annan, Scotland.
My first concern is not doing any damage to 130 year old wood boat. For instance, I have no idea how the wood should be treated, painted, etc. The LOA is 30.5 inches. Beam is 9 inches. I’m assuming the scale is 1 in to 1 ft. The mast would be about 28 inches above deck.
I do have some guidance for this minor (I hope) reconstruction. The model was used for the creation of a silver model that is in the Dumfies Museum. They were nice enough to provide me with a link to the silver model. I've done some work using that as a reference to estimate the height of the mast, length of the boom, gaff and spar. But it’s just a guess.
One of my first questions is how is the mast secured to the boat? There is a metal bracket, which seems to work, but the mast I have seems a bit short to reach the rectangular shot that is cut into the bottom of the boat. It seems like there may be another part that fits into the rectangular slot to hold the bottom of the mast?
Appreciate any help or suggestions.
