HMS Abercrombie plans
« on: February 03, 2013, 12:57:26 pm »

Hi...
I was just wasting a sunday morning looking at warships and saw a picture of HMS Abercrombie... It looks very interesting. (I like studying plans, even if I don't end up building the ship)... does anyone know where i can find a plan as a PDF?
Cheers Lee

Hi Lee

The Profile Morskie website have PDF plans available of the HMS Abercrombie and her sister HMS Roberts, for pictures I would suggest Ian Buxton's book Big Gun Monitors.

Hi Nick... I remember now... you told me about this site before... I downloaded HMS Prince of Wales from there.. (I didn't see Abercrombie, will look again). Weren't you interested in HMS Abercrombie, as a future build? I am not treading on your toes showing an interest in this ship am I ?

Hi Lee,
I have been researching HMS Abercrombie as my father-in-law served on her.  I have a selection of jpg plans approx A4 suitable for scaling, plan side elevation and hull section profiles.
Please send me a PM (personal message) and I would be happy to send them to you together with some excellent pictures of a model of her.

I remember the Roberts in Devonport as part of the reserve fleet.
We had to cross her to get to the repair ship out board when we were young artificer apprentices
back in 59 and 60 on our familiarisation visits. The Ordnance Artificer Apps  loved to see the guns.

Hi Lee,

Plans and images sent to you direct.  You will have to expand the plans images onto a large format sheet for scaling.

This ship was a possible future build project, after I eventually finish my latest project, which may not be for some time.  There was a 1/700 model from Combrig, but unfortunately not in production.

Hi Bob... I just had a quick look through the pictures, they are excellent... really useful. Also the hull plan is great, just what I was looking for. If I get hold of any other useful material or plans I shall let you know, in case they can be of equal use to you.  Thanks again... Lee

Hi Bob... I noticed on the hull plan you sent me, it shows two different sets of profiles... one is described as the 'Admiralty Plan' and the other as the 'Hobby plan'...why are they so different? I would have thought the hull should be built as per the original ship... which is presumably the Admiralty plan.

From what I recall from the write up, the ship was designed as a very shallow draught 'raft' to get close inshore for bombardment.  The alternative deeper profile makes for a more practical model for sailing.
