wood sealer/resins
« on: February 04, 2013, 03:42:57 pm »

Hello folks, am having a go at my first wooden boat, the wavemaster from Vintage model boats.  Have seen many posts where sanding sealer, finishing resin and all other manner of resins and fibreglass matting / tissues are used to seal and add a bit more body to ply skins etc. Basically I want to seal the outside skins prior to painting and also seal and waterproof the joints and the inside of the hull. Can finishing resin do the job straight off or should sanding sealer be the first coat?  How does finishing resin differ from the resin used with matting when wanting to stiffen up the keel say?  Any advice would be much appreciated or even a possible link to tutorials that all ready cover this topic.
                           Regards, Tony.

With mine I used Z-poxy PT 40 finishing resin over a coat of sanding sealer.  I found it to be a little lumpy.  Next time I think I'd go with sanding sealer then a layer of aircraft tissue and cellulose dope. Then spray as normal.  The Epoxy is good inside to help reinforce and seal all the joints.

I have used Ezy Kote (think that's right) from Deluxe Materials. Its water based so considerably less messy to use than epaxy :-))  I have used it alone inside to seal balsa and ply, and outside with aircraft tissue to strengthen and seal ply. Its quick drying as well, so you can apply a few coats quite quickly. Dries perfectly dry and "unsticky".

Tony I have just finished a Fire boat annd Mrs Stav is getting ready to paint hers as well.I dont bother using sanding sealer at all on wood.I simply spray on 5 coats of Halfords car laquer to seal the wood, rub it down with 180 grit dry then use halfords primer filler and away you go.
I allways use David's Isoponn resin form halfords and simply pour it into the hull slosh it about nand simply brush on to the bulkheads.
