Two Plans of the same ship... very different!
« on: February 08, 2013, 06:36:50 pm »

I have been redrawing some plans of HMS Abercrombie... just for the fun of it really, not sure if I will commit to building her... BobK kindly sent me a plan of the hull frames which I have been working from... I also ordered the Profile Morskie plan of this ship.... look at the difference between the frame profiles... Surprisingly different!

Ships plans are either made from a redraft of original yard plans, not always complete or clear, or are made from measurements from photographs (or both). In almost all cases for a ship of any age prior to the 1960's its in the eye and judgement of the draftsman. The older the ship the worse it gets.
I always check any plan I use against photos and I then redraft. The corrections before building a model.

Lash...the above water lines are similar...just a few differing radii, but the underwater lines between both sets of plans will give you a totally differing hull profile between frames 1 back to 5.......Derek

Yes I know... I can't find any photos of this ship that shows the underside of the hull... (unsurprisingly).

Snowwolflair, your pic does not display

One is probably a slight redesign to make it easier to build the models hull ok2

Modified for stability and weight, would be my guess.

Yes, thats the plan i was originally working from. I had assumed that the Admiralty version was the correct one but it is still different to the Morskie version.

I would go with the admiralty plan.  Morske are good but they contain a lot of interpretation.

Hi Lee

Perhaps these pictures will help regarding the shape of the hull, they are from Ian Buxton's book Big Gun Monitors.
The pictures are primarily of HMS Roberts but Abercrombie was her sister ship so they should be roughly identical.

They are excellent pictures... thanks Nick. I know you were considering making this ship... I hope I am not treading on your toes.... I probably wont build it, it just caught my interest.

Don't worry about it Lee  :-))

I've plenty of projects to keep me going for years to come like yourself I was just interested in the hull and plans.
It would be nice to see someone build it.

Regards

She is an extraordinary looking ship... I was also looking at HMS Prince of Wales as a next build... but at 1/128th she'll only just fit in my little workshop.... HMS Abercrombie, on the other hand, would fit nicely at 1/96th!  :}
