Hello folks, am at the stage of painting a Deans 488 mtb - just waiting for warmer weather. What was the paint these craft were generally finished in -  matt, satin, or gloss?  The non slip areas of the deck are obviously matt, but what of the superstructure, torpedo tubes and Guns etc?  There are suggestions within the instructions which refer mainly to gloss finishes - just not sure in my own mind if gloss would look right. Any thoughts or suggestions please.

Tony recommend a silk finish for the grey - a gloss finish doesn't look right scaled down.

I'd concur with Pugwash.  Warships were probably a matt finish, mostly, if not from the can then from exposure to the weather. However on a model a matt finish can look a little "dead" so a semi matt finish would probably work best.  This finish can be "toned down" a little with weathering.  Salt spray, exhaust gases and grime take their toll on warships and carefully represented can make a model.  In my opinion, however, go easy on the rust.  From what I know of the navy, a bosun wouldn't stand for the patches of rust you see on some models.  Hence most sailors handyness with a paint bucket.

Thanks lads, one of the prompts for asking is that some of the colour recomendations refer to Halfords sprays which are mostly if not all gloss finishes. You both confirm my first thoughts that satin/ semi gloss finish would be more appropriate so it may be out with the airbrush. Anyone tried airbrushing Revell acrylics?

You can use Halfords paints and overspray them with a satin varnish, that should give the finish you want
