I.O.W. Severn class build

hi all
i am going to take on the mammoth task of building a 1:20 scale scratch built severn class lifeboat from yarmouth on the isle of wight.
lets hope it works out as it is my first boat of this quality.
iv'e done  a fair bit of research upon witch i found a youtube video by ken chirchill that led me to this site  and his build blog.... well werth the read  :-)) :-))
the build
the plans have arrived and have now been made all to the same scale. using carbon paper iv'e redrawn the frames onto 1/8th light ply.
i have also redrawn the keel but this was done on 1/4 5ply from the local model shop.
whilst doing these first steps i have realised there is not enough frames {:-{ . on the plan there is 5 frames plus a stern shown, though the plan also shows there could be a possible 15 frames !!!. so where i ask do the others come from ? is it all guess work or can i duplicate some of the frames i already have this may become apparent as i progress with the build.

im now glueing the frames to the keel so i can find the profile of the frames that wernt shown on the plans,
getting the tunnels for the props is not easy , so using a thin plank between the frames i have should give me the curve i need.
hope this makes sense.

Hi Harvey

I shall watch this with interest as I've just started to build a 1/12th Severn and will be basing it on 17-25. It will probably take me a couple of years though. I've managed to find a few good photo's on the 'net but would love to get over to Yarmouth to get plenty of shots of my own and maybe a look around the boat.

Hi rich,if you contact the coxswain of the lifeboat you are going to build,most of them will welcome you with open arms.It is always good to take lots of photo`s when possible of the boat you are building.baloo(Martin)

Thanks Baloo, the only problem with choosing to do 17-25 is that it is on the I.O.W and I'm not so it means getting the ferry across there for the day and hoping that the boat will also be there at the same time. It would be a long day out, that's the trouble with living so far from the coast.

a photo session around the lifeboat is a must, when i go im also going to take my kayak to get some shots from the water line, might put a different angle on things %%
though things have got to warm up a bit for me to go for a dip .

more progress has been made  :D :D
firstly a lot of measuring has been done and two more of the frames needed have been produced.
then the curved stern was designed , i decided to do it with two side way frames that slot onto the rear of the keel.
this was then made stronger by inserting two balsa formers and balsa edging to increase the glueing area for the planks.this has produced a light and strong stern.

I have some photos of the iow severn if you need them? they were taken on a very cold weekend trip in november.
unfortunatly the blizzard conditions put pay to the photo shoot half way through...

Hi Greg

Did you manage to get a look on board the boat ? I've managed to find a few decent photo's but I don't have any of the flying bridge or inside the wheelhouse. Could I possibly also have copies of your photo's, you can never have to many.

Hi Harvey,
 Not an islander, milton keynes is as far from water as you can get :(( . Been building the yarmouth iow arun for past few years. i have pictures of the arun 52-08 on holidays as a child and have been trying to recreate it. went over to the island hoping to pick up some information but the weather beat us and retreated back to the mainland. i was taking pictures with a view to a future build as well so there is a few close ups.. if  you pm your email i can send them to you.

Sorry didnt manage to get any on board, only as far as i could stretch over the railings with my feet being held by my girlfriend whilst sideways blizzard blowing(-5), before running in to nearest cafe to defrost.

ive been trying to do the stringers and finding some problems.
on one of the frames that was not on the plan, its not lineing up with the rest, but at least there is to much wood so i can remove the slither needed {:-{
i have also found out that i am going to need the bow stern tapered to the center line or the boat will end up longer than it should plus with the keel tapered the planks will lay flatter. now i just need to work out from what point to taper it from as the keel is ment to be sticking out from the planks for most of its length.
i have also started cutting the planks, and wow a lot  harder than i thought. first i tryed with a craft knife and a metal ruler but this was taking way to long.
next i tryed with my power fret saw still not easy but i have produced some. ( the planks are to be made from 1/16th ply )

stringers are all on now, but build is now on hold as no where i live has wood in stock and they dont know when theyer getting more in  >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
you would think they would keep more of a eye on their stock levels  grrrrrr  <:( <:(

Its a pity the RNLI don,t do a video/photo tour of their boats,
If they did they would sell quite a few I would imagine.

yes i agree that would be very usefull , covering every inch of the boat inside and out. also being able to pause where needed to get the information needed.
maybe someone should drop a hint to them  :-)) :-))
