hull "drain valve" ?
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:54:22 pm »

Hi all,

having now lost the stopper from the drain hole on the back of my yacht hull 3 times
and having twice fashioned a new one from self amalgamating tape, i got to thinking

does anyone make a spring loaded drain hole fitting that is normally held shut by the
spring, but when pressed from outside the hull, opens up the drain hole such that any water on the
hull can be poured out ?

ideally something that can be mastic or pipe welded onto the exterior of the hull ?

what i have in mind would look like a shallow version of the top of a brass "click to retract" ball point pen from the outside, and would re-seal when released

im going to have to get a lathe soon as its frustrating to think i could make one in a few hours :)

regards

BB

you can get a similar drain valve for small carburettors to drain the fuel from the float chamber.
eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOWL-DRAIN-ASSEMBLY-FITS-TECUMSEH-FLOAT-CARBURETTOR-/330878224093?pt=UK_Lawnmower_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d09e106dd

When I moulded mine using a bit of silicone rubber in the spout of the dispenser (it was going to set in there and bung it up anyway), I put a length of copper wire into it.  When all had set, the wire could be shaped into a loop, and tied to the backstay with a bit of string until I thought of something better.  Still OK after 25 years.

My drainhole is on deck in the bow so no handy backstay, same idea though ie solidified silicone bung with a fine cord threaded through centre and secured halfway along a matchstick or similar. Slot matchstick into hole lengthwise and release so it hangs horizontal - sorted !

  Hi BB.
an old yacht I had  used a vicks nasal stick for the bung in the stern.  I consists of a plastic tube with with an internal
threaded end.  The inside part containing the mediciment  screws into the external tube the handle is knurled so you can
get a grip on it when your hands are wet and numb.   Just a matter of cutting the plastic to size glue in transom scrw on /off.
