WAVENEY CLASS MODEL.
« on: March 17, 2013, 11:50:24 am »

Hi guys, got a Waveney class lifeboat to tinker with, needs a small amount of TLC. Came with motors, and couplings, props and rudders in place, servo plus a speed controller, just need batteries-my TX & RX should work okay.
Now I have to figure out how to fit it all together...I think I maybe calling on Stan...STAN!

Also, any idea of scale? She is 23inches long and 6 3/4 wide. Just so I can get some bits.

Join the club - I too recently acquired a Waveney in need of tlc - but my scale according to Rottweiller is probably 1. 20th - and Mick is very well up in lifeboats -  it seems that there are quite a lot of models out there in different scale - I think that the model shops and internet suppliers of electric goods are going to do quite well with all this refurbishing - will probably kit mine out with one of the cheaper 2.4ghz transmitters combos - the question is what do we do with all the older stuff ?

The Billings one is 1:40 scale and is just over a foot long
1:20 would be 26 inches in old money
1:24 is 22 inches

Probably easier to find 1:24. fittings.

I am building two 1:16 fishing boats and fittings are as rare as the rocking horse

Thanks Ned - the length of my Waveney is about 29 inches so presume it must be about 1.20th or thereabouts - I also have the baby Waveney yet to be completed - Billings must have stopped production of the larger Waveney some time ago - I had thought it was a Metcalf moulding but Mick seems to be sure that it is a Billings  regards Stuart

Metcalf mouldings kit is 1:12 at 44",the 29" version is 1:20 scale the odd model shop might stock(old stock) the "billings kit".When you start to referb your boat if you want any flags i know a man that does them(free-hand on silk)

Thanks Baloo for the info - what would we do without all you chaps who have this knowledge - it is the very best of MBM to be able to get advice and help particularly for those of us who are very much beginners.  The best about all these older models they can be put right usually by we less competent folk without feeling that we make such a mess of things - looking at the models on show recently made by Mick one can only admire the effort made to the detail that some you folk achieve - fantastic

Again, I must correct the statement innocently made above, Most people know (and I hope understand!) that I do NOT make my models.I actually buy them. All of them though, have had some work done on them by myself, in the way of replacement, refurbishment,or improvement.ALL my models are of Lifeboats stationed in Cornwall,so have been altered in the detail needed to make them as true to the original as possible.
I sincerely hope this statement does not go against me,as I know a lot of people do not like the idea of "chequebook modellers"All I can say in my defence is that someone somewhere has made them.
Sincerely,
Mick F

if it weren't for "chequebook" modellers Mick, there would be an awfull lot of beautiful models stuck up in lofts, sheds or just skipped when their useful lives become over in the minds of their original builders when they get bored with them...

It's the best form of "green recycling" that there is and absolutely no need to feel ashamed of buying a model.

I buy motorcars because I can't build them..........I could be called a chequebook motorist {-) {-) {-) {-)

Why should it? I for one make static models, like you I adapt to fit my mood at the time, but the kit is bought, also many folk on here do not 'scratch' build, they buy a kit, even a scratch builder will have to buy certain parts, decking items etc. So, I think you are entitled to add your opinions etc, you still have a keen appriciation of models and the modellers art-then you change to suit, making you a modeller. Both my RC boats are bought with TLC needed, so I am the same as you. This is what I like about this site, various levels of skill coupled with differing ideas, and that is the way it should be, we are all different and get different things out of our models.

Whatever the opinions are about building models or purchasing those already made MBM is still a super place to exchange ideas and seek for advice and help.  In the end to me the most important thing is to be happy with what one has achieved and to share it with others - not much point in keeping models in the loft better to let others enjoy them and if one can raise awareness of the RNLI then that is great. When is the next show Mick !!

 Hi Guys.
had one of those larger styrene hulled billings waveny`s some years ago and its actually quite a good sea boat for the size
of it. I now have his big brother in wood and as we are having a fess up session yes I bought it though it still need lots of
work. Like Mick I also have bought models which are A1 quality these are for my personal enjoyment as a form of art
though they are taken to shows for other people to look at. Other models I buy are for full refurb treatment starting with all
over paint strip through to the entire inside of hull being skinned with resin and tissue matting.
Some times I look at the refurb job and think I must be barking trying to make a silk puse from a sow`s ear without
making a pigs ear of it.  {-)

I also enjoy the technical challenges of some RTR conversions and and trying to get the pint into the proverbial as with
the tyco sea arrow into which I managed to fit 2 std servos, bobs board, RX pack, 8.4v pencell pack and the receiver.

I have just finished conversion to standard 2ch radio a NQD NO.757T-6018 1:12

I have fitted a 20amp viper for use with a 9.6v c cell pack and am using seperate 6v RX pack.

The boat comes with a 7.2v pack but this would`nt pull the skin off a custard. Bench testing my work the air wash from
prop blew all the paper off the bench. Slight down side was the O ring between the out drive coupler and the shaft sheared off.

This meant the coupler was was rubbing against the shaft...not good. After a lot of tinkering  and uttering words about
somebodys parentage I did away with the dog and bone coupler between the motor and shaft and fitted the standard red
coupler. This prevented the shaft sliding up and down and I was able then to lock the out drive coupler inplace away from
contact with the shaft.   hoping to test the beast soon if the rain stays away.

Boats for me are a passion, an interest, a hobby, a way of life I never claim if asked if I had built something I had not as I
would then be untrue to my creative self.!!

                   Frank.    :P

Hi Mick the work you do on behalf of the RNLI is second to none, if you buy boats to enhance your display good on you. You don't hide the fact that you have bought the boats but you also have made several changes & mods to make them better, good for you is what I say. Mick B.
