WWI Liferaft ??
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:25:35 pm »

The tug I'm building / finishing had a liferaft stowed next to one of the funnels. The kit manufacturer ommited it in their fittings, but I'd like to add it if I can. Trouble is I can't find one having searched on Google a number of times.

Scale is 1:48 if anybody can help locate one, or give some ideas where I could try.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris

Do you know what shape the liferafts are?

My WWII tug has a couple of rounded shape rafts very similar to the ones sold by this chap on ebay.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/battlecrafts/m.html

Mine are the 4th item down which are 57mm x 37mm but mine were supplied in the kit by Modelslipway. He has a square version with oars lower down the page.

Might be the wrong type for your boat though being a later version but worth a mention I thought.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the link. Truth is I don't know what it would like like, as the book I've got (British Steam Tugs) just shows a rectangular block with possible lines across it (maybe just literally a raft to hold onto??) - it is a deck / building plan, not a photo of the actual boat. May go with rounded end one you mention if nobody has any better suggestions. Would they have had inflatable rafts at the end of WWI ?

Thanks

Chris

Just found the instructions for my boat and they are called Carly floats.
Not inflatable as such but cork and copper. The Wikipedia page suggests they were in use throughout both wars?

I didn't realise the centre dropped out of it on a net like structure to make it deeper. Really is a flotation device then rather than a raft to keep you dry.
Useful pictures and information, Many thanks.  :-)

Wow,

Always impressed by the info on this site, and the speed people reply.

Now I know what they are called, have ordered 2 small ones from

Thanks again
