« on: April 10, 2013, 05:51:05 pm »

Can any one help please,I'm trying to do my first build but I can not figger out were to put to two strips iv cut out from the printed ply (bilge keels) And from the instructions its asking for me to check their curvature to the hull and mark the ends onto the moulded hull platforms... Call me thick lol but I just don't understand it :o  If any one can sort me out I would be very happy Thank you in advance  :-))

You have given very little info to go on, and a picture or two would help a lot.

It sounds like you have been given the shape to cut out already.
Perhaps the thing to do is to slide the cut outs over the curvature of the  hull, until you find a nice snug fit, when the piece in in line fore/aft. Then mark the positions of the ends of the cutouts on to the hull.

There is a small raised section on the turn of the bilge about 3/8th" wide and the same length as the piece of ply you have cut out and just forward of amidships. Glue the edge of the keel to the centre of this and fit a length of 1/8" sq timber to the underside and against the hull to strengthen it; ensure that the inner side of the keel is a snug fit against the hull before finally gluing in position.

Thanks for the replies, I was thrown as I had expected them to be made from the same material as the hull or even plastic not plywood.   :embarrassed:  Like I say its my first build and the instructions are not all that clear. Would you replace them for a sturdier material? Now you've told me this I'm thinking of getting something more robust and laminating into the hull instead of just stuck and pinned. I'll let you know if it works or not.

I would have posted pictures but the wife tells me i need something like tiny pic to do so, as this is the first forum i've joined I have no clue what so ever what the hell she's on about {:-{ {-)

Thanks again Derek and Liverbudgie and Tigertiger

I would not do any substituting/replacing yet, unless you are confident in what you are doing. Sometimes glue is as strong or stronger than the parts.

I have to ask.
Is this a static model? and are you converting to radio control?
Or is it a working RC model?

Is this Mountfleet's Pilot Boat Britannia, HMY Britannia (cutter rigged), or some other model?

Its the Mountfleet RC Britannia. I think i'll be sticking with whats in the kit for the time being. I don't think the instructions are very clear for a novice ship builder like myself so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Don't worry, ask away.
Instructions are often not that clear, even for experienced builders.
