Hi,

Rescued this from the bonfire, and would love to restore/rebuild!

Any guidance on identification would be greatly received!

Thanks!

Thanks, it is a good save! Quite large at 4ft long and the hull is in pretty good condition. Just could do with some ideas on how the cabin area would look.

Probably the best model shop in Liverpool during the fifties and early sixties and well before I think, spent many hours gazing in their window. later became Stan Catchpoles and moved to Bold Street, but now gone the way of all decent model shops.

Hi frank,
Thanks for that! They certainly look similar, definately in the same 'class', and gives me an idea for the cabin area.

Hi Bill. your cabin are is all there just needs re built.  You have the full height measurement of the cabin on the port side with its three windows you just have to mirror that for the starboard side.  The fore and aft section had two windows again you have the height from the port side so you just take that neasurement all the way round.  Just need to make a couple of hatches after that and your sorted.
Curious to know if the vintage motor is still alive with its dog n bone connector

I emailed these photos off to Mike Cummings at Vintage Model Works, to see if he had any ideas. He came back with it being a 'Lorraine' built from a Vic Smeed plan! It does match the size, although I need to get hold of some better photos to confirm! There is a member on her who has done a really good write up on a resto he did on a Lorraine.

THe motor is certainly of interest Frank! I'll be borrowing a powerpack from work tonight to test it, hopefully the bearings and bushes are okay, along with the step down box on the front.

It is Lorraine, good ole RipMax/Mersey Marine u/j, still the best.

Pretty sure Lorraine is the correct answer and I think I know where to get plans if you cant find them on your side of the world. Cheers, Ian.

Thanks for all the help! And thanks Circlip for the email, very helpful indeed!  %%

Stripped down the motor today, cleaned and tested. runs fine, gearbox at the front needs a little attention still, but good. Now, there are four connectors on the back of the motor, I paired them as shown in the picture below, and it runs well off a stabilised power supply, changing RMP with a change in voltage. Have I done this correctly? I was unsure if I needed to supply the brushes with a constant voltage ?!?!? (I'm ex RC planes, this is 1 more wire than I'm used to!!).

So as a power source I was looking at a 12v battery similar to this sort of thing:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VIPER-LAKESTAR-BAIT-BOAT-BATTERY-12-V-7AMP-x-1-12-VOLT-7AH-RECHARGEABLE-/230765340210?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item35baafa632

as the ability to hare around the lake at 70mph is not going to be a requirement!

Cheers

Thanks once again Ian!!

So now I have a name, a designer, plans, instructions & motor wiring diagram. I think I have now run out of excuses!!!

Thanks for your help Ian, and indeed everyone else!! I will start taking pictures etc, and when I start a build thread, I'll put a link to it on here :)

4 terminals makes it sound like a field wound motor.  Does it reverse?  If its a permanent magnet motor, I can't think what the extra terminals are for.

malcolmfrary,

Yes, I believe it is field wound. THe way I have linked the terminals together rotates in one direction, whilst to rotate the opposite way requires the terminals to be connected up 'diagonally'. Does that mean i can alter rotation with is set as it is, and reverse the polarity of the input voltage (as with a 'modern' esc with a reverse function), I don't know. I was just happy the motor worked!!

Some further tinkering is required :)

It has been done with other field wound motors - it normally involves figuring which is the rotating connection and which is the static, then finding a bridge rectifier that can carry the field current, and connecting the field through that.  That way, the field is always the same way round, and the motor behaves like a permanent magnet motor.  I think there's a section on dodgy geezer's site - http://taycol.hobby-site.com/  where the subject gets pretty well covered.  The other way would be replace it with a modern motor, but wouldn't perhaps be in the right spirit.

I have an old Sea Queen with the original Taycol wound field motor operated by a modern radio and speed controller. It runs well but did require a Bridge Rectifier and lots of suppression gadgets. Dodgy's website above will be lots of help and of course  you can always ask for help here. It is well worth the effort to keep the original motor. Cheers, Ian.

a strange coincidence this, I found on old test report on the MM Navigator motor from the 1950s. Ron Waring, who will be remembered by many of us gave the motor a big thumbs up and rated it very highly (for the time). Definatly keep it.

Hi, you do not often see the Navigator. I do not think they will have the same intererfence problems that Taycol have.  A much better project, I seem to remember they were made individually rather than mass manufactured.

As far as the reversing goes I would check that the motor runs smoothly with battery power direct.  I found using the full wave rectifier connected to a Taycol it ran "lumpy".  Which I think was caused by running a series motor in shunt mode.  I am not sure.
Also you are putting 2 diodes in each leg and losing i/p volts.  The reversing can be done with just 2 lusty diodes and the motor which in my case was a Taycol XXXX ran very smoothly.
I am away from home at the moment but I think I sent details to Kiwimodeller some years ago on "another forum".
I was bidding on ebay for one but missed out as the price went up.
regards Roy

Thanks Roy and Chas for the further comments.

The motor is pretty sound. I have run it from a 12V stabilised mains supply with no load, and under load. Seems to run very sweet indeed! Have just ordered a 12V lead acid gel battery off eBay, so tests with that soon!

I asked about the reversing here, and I started another thread too, but quickly got shunted back to the website about tycol motors. Its a fascinating site, but I couldn't really get the answers I was looking for (probably down to my limited knowledge/understanding!). I was hoping someone could provide a 'do this, then do that' instruction on making this reversable! Normally I would just be happy with a forward running motor, but she is quite a sizable boat (I briefly considered bow thrusters until I saw ow much they were!).
Thanks again for any help heading this way

Bill
PS I have started 'structural renovation, and when I have made enough progress, with enough photos, will start a thread  :-) )
