Ghost in the shell hi ya there mate, yes, this idea has been thrown about a bit to have separate topics as you suggested.   At the moment, we are just trying to gather suitable material to put into these topics.  I am looking, at present at different topics, to see what we can move across.   Any suggestions, please put them on this thread, so we can use them as a reference and look at the threads and see if we can take the chitter chat out of them, so we end up with all the relevant points on the subject  ;D

what do you think?

sounds a good idea, also on a seperate note, the sales and wants section, ask those who have SOLD items they are selling, and Aquired their WANTS to lock the topic, then at that point they can be scanned by moderation and removed to save space.

John, looks like you'll end up with two types of material:

1: The longer "how to" pieces
2. The useful short  "hints & tips"

Some sort of index will also be needed so people can see at a glance what each item is about. Ideally there should be an index post above each section with maybe a corresponding hotlink to the relevant text.

When you are organising data it's a bit like the measure twice, cut once advice. You really need to think carefully about the structure initially so that you can just slot things in as they come along.

Getting the main headings right is really important. This will be easier once you see what you have got as you quite rightly point out.

also for future how-to's, anyone who is doing one, it would be good to post stage by stage pics, like a haynes car manual, so you can follow the instructions by the figure, (glue this to that and cut here blah blah blah) or follow the pics.

Quite right Ghost, but doing this properly like Martin has been documenting his Bismarck build requires quite a bit of effort and dedication. If you start something like this you do have to be prepared to finish it if it's to be of any real value. It can be like a Model Boats kit review, not always that easy to do even if the regular reviewers make it look simple!

what the wise person would do would be to document it first, taking photos as such, after all a How-to, such as a wiring of a set of lights, installing a propeller shaft, stripping down an IC motor wont be a full build log, so in the event of say a carburettor change on a .3cc IC motor could be documented and photographed in a couple of nights, and with something like PSP or Adobe, images be modified with arrows pointing at key components, with the write up being done in word.  its just then a case of open thread, copy text and upload pics to thread. Load onto forum - add a feedback thread link and Lock thread.

...as for the bizmark thread, that is off a part works anyway, so though the main part is a build thread, encompassing the feedback etc, a small section, such as laying a keel and frames could be done as a How-to

I wrote a couple of reviews for Chris Jackson at Marine Modelling, it was hard enough trying to get the right word count and make sure all the tenses are correct without needing to check for ambiguity.

with how to's i would have guessed the best idea was to think that everyone else is stupid and make it as simple to follow as possible, that way when you do meet that one in a trillion case, who is a little bit lacking candle power in his lightbulb, he will be able to follow it.

(I may be wrong)

looking good bluebird,

perhaps a section for IC here as well, esp as I have asked a general question in engine cleaning "next time someone strips one down can do a write up for the how-to section"

Thank you ghost in the shell. It is reasuring to know that my talent as the forum moron is being recognised! now, if everyone follows this K.I.S.S. advice I will hopefully be able to learn something. Seriously though: Please Please remember that some of us have not been modelling boats for a lifetime and anyone giving me what they believe to be helpful advice can never insult me. Anyone thinking that they hold the key to all modelling knowledge and refuses to share it- well they do themselves no favours.

Regards to all

Clegg, when i have read some of the instructions that come with the boats, I have found myself to be more confused than when i am actually standing there with a set of pictures, model glue and knife.  yes robbe your instructions are ****!! Graupner ones are much more easier to follow!  it is this theory that made me post the re-wire of Southampton the way I did.  so now a totall noob could do the rewire with only mediocre solder skills. (I cant solder very well at all so if someone can do a BASIC tutorial / how to on soldering that would be useful)
