J Class Sailing Day, Nottingham.
« on: June 16, 2013, 03:13:39 pm »

The UK J Day!

The Rotherham and Woodley Sailing Clubs are organising a J Class day hosted by the Nottingham Model Boat Club and to be held at Colwick Country Park (NG4 2EW) on Sunday 28th July starting about 10 am.

The event is aimed at owners of J Class yachts and similar. There will be some organised racing and even a small prize but competitors are not expected to take it too seriously! Most of the day is for free sailing and chatting about the J Class.

The facilities at Colwick are good. There are toilets nearby, there should be a small BBQ on the day and you can park next to or close to the concrete launch area. There is even some interest in camping on the Sat eve! There is a £1.50 fee to enter the park.

If you intend to come with a boat it would help the organising of the day if you could register your interest  by emailing [email protected]. Use the same address if you have any questions. If you register then if there are any last minute changes I can get in touch with you.

With warm sunshine and a fair wind it should be a good day!

I will be there with my "little" boat, looking forward to meeting other owners.

Thanks chaps. This is starting to look like a well attended day! So far about 13 boats, mostly either the Canterbury or Nottingham J's and I expect a few more when word gets around. The racing should be spectacular! It would be good to see other J's as well if there are any out there...?

Hello,
The Canterbury Js, and the Nottingham Js, how similar are they ?.
Would either one have the advantage if they are to race together ?.
My J is a couple of feet longer than either, but my boat is a lot heavier!!.
Which really shows when the wind is very light.
The Birkenhead Club run races for ANY size of Yacht - - - all sailing together!.
All of the boats start off together, ALL of the boats are Timed when they finish.
The only requirement is, that you MUST try your best while racing !.
For example, if  boat "A " finishes two minutes in front of boat "B" - - - "B" starts the Race two minutes before Boat "A".
So everthing is evened out !!, makes for very exciting racing!!
I think they call it "The RYGGED Start ".

Hello John.
The Canterbury J and the Nottingham J are effectively the same boat. The have the same dimensions, displacement and are built to the same rules. The only difference is that when making the Canterbury J the model maker bolts the ballast up to the bottom of the fibreglass moulding and will then fill the gap, and then paint the hull. The Nottingham J is a "full" mold and the same ballast is placed inside a complete molding of the hull. No filling or painting is required. As the completed models are the same, there is no sailing advantage to either.

The day is open to all J Class yachts and similar but how we structure the racing will depend on the mix of yachts that attend on the day. Every effort will be made to ensure that all owners have a good day! It's "social" racing and we should all have fun!

Multiple J''s sailing together will make an impressive sight. Bring your yacht, its an impressive model and will add to the spectacle!

See ya there!

Hi Alan, its a bit far to bring my J from the other side of the world but heres hoping you have a great day and I look forward to seeing lots of photos of Js in action. Best way to ensure that racing is really for fun is to have a briefing at the start of the day, then draw all prizes out of a hat and then begin sailing. Best of luck, Ian.

Alan,
Are you bringing your new 5ft hull with you?
I saw it at Doncaster and would like another look if I can make it to Nottingham.

Hi.
Just unearthed my J class to take a measure and its 5ft along the deck.
The model is on Bob Underwood hull which I aquired off flea bay some time ago. Wondered what happened to his range of hulls. It was in need of a re-furb mainly a deck strip and re-varnish. The rudder pintle was broken.  I have got as far as to drill and tap the rudder and make a new pintle.

Hi, all and apologies for my lack of response. I've just returned from that beer fest which is otherwise known as the Le Mans 24 Hour and I've got a bit of a headache!

For those who can't make it (and hello to you all in NZ!) I expect that there will be some further comment on these pages and we will work to ensure that they are all positive. There may also be some further comment and pics in the Marine Modelling International mag. If all goes well it might be ...the "first"!!

I will have a small display and will include the 60 inch hull as it has provoked a lot more interest that I thought it would! I will also have some bow bumpers and also some pinstripes that go just below the deck. They look good with a bespoke finnial design at the bow end and will be available in a couple of colours. I will also have some embroidered polo shirts but the day is mainly for J boats of any type to get on the water...should be fun! The more the merrier so don't be shy!

Hello,
The "J Class Day" is certainly looking very good, with 17 boats confirmed and up to 30, IF, the weather holds good!!.
The weather has a geat effect on a persons enjoyment levels, even when doing something as good as sailing boats in good company.
So heres hoping that this present spell of good weather can stretch out until the 28th of this month.
I will be there - - - even if it snows !!!!.

The long range weather forecast remains favourable and to date the waters are weed free. There will be some representation from the Vintage Model Boat Club which will add interest and although there will be plenty of free sailing the lake is big enough to allow for both free sailing and racing at the same time.
The day remains targeted at the J Class yacht but if you've got something of interest bring it along!
The postcode for Colwick Park is NG4 2EW and the access to River Road is through the industrial estate off the A612 Nottingham to Southwell Road. There is a £1.50 fee to enter the park, but there is parking next to the lake and toilet facilities nearby.
The BBQ is confirmed and although there is no mains electricity we should be able to provide some tea and coffee.
