What is it and what is it used for?  And should I be utilizing it somewhere?

I have seen graphited string, teflon pipe thread sealant (rolled in to a string) and Viton o rings used for glands. Only needed for things like slide valve link rods or a piston rod where you have a rod passing through a housing and moving with a sliding action not a rotating motion. Hope this helps, Ian.

Thanks Ian, that's very helpful, now I think I understand what it is used for.   The only motors I own are a PM Research 8M (V twin, which I built and uses teflon O rings), a Krick twin (which is old and may use it) and a new Stuart Puffin (which I think uses O rings also).  I have not had the Krick apart. I suppose that is something that needs investigation as it does have some years on it.

Guys.......I think you will also find graphited twine is used as the steam joint on many valve spindle glands in both model [1/8"] tube size needle & globe valves as manufactured in the UK.......
When we consider the spindle shaft as approx. 2 mm diameter...what a perfect solution  ....as the geometry for a captive o-ring  would be    ...........Derek
