Meccano Footbridge
« on: March 08, 2013, 12:58:31 pm »

a new footbridge has been built at Nob End little lever. Its been made by local people from a giant meccano set! see http://liamcurtin.co.uk/meccano-bridge/  for further details. For the first time in decades this part of the canal will be filled with water for the opening of the bridge on 5th ASpril.  We would love it if people came down and sailed their model boats on this new water.  Would anyone be interested?  If so please contact me  Liam Curtin  ---details removed, please use PM Private message ---  Many thanks  Liam

What a fantastic bridge!!! :-)) :-)) :-))

And a great offer to sail and display the boats.....

Unfortunately, it is a bit too far for me...but I am sure there are more local folk on here that would welcome the opportunity to take part....

Come on guys - free invitation to sail on calm and uncluttered waters!!!!

Hopefully they've welded the nuts on or it's going to be too easy to put it back into a "Box" %)

About 50 mins drive for me, if I am feeling well enough I may nip down. Is it anytime or a specific date?

What do the Meccano societies and enthusiasts think of this masterpiece.  Any help from the company of the same name ?

There is no such thing as a free lunch >>:-(  .........Derek

Builders used 700  oversized nuts and bolts, which cost £18 each
  • Each  component is ten times bigger and heavier than regular-sized  ones
  • Artist Liam  Curtin said he wanted to reflect Bolton's engineering heritage
  • Two factories  made the beams, nuts and bolts in the same style as a toy set
  • Money for the art  project came from a developer building homes nearby
  • It gave the  council money for the bridge as part of its planning permission

It is hoped that the project will kickstart a regeneration of the historic stretch of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal at Nob End.
