Wyeforce Tug.
« on: August 15, 2013, 07:53:31 pm »

Hi guys,I have recently acquired a Wyeforce tug in very bad condition,
I have had to remove the old deck and motors which were held in by silicone sealer.
I know a lot of people on the forum must have built this boat and can direct me
along the correct path and possibly give me a shopping list for Haydock
I intend fitting toothed belts & pulleys.What pulley size/ratio,would I need,
I can use MMB,s 900 motors,I also have 700 BB Turbo,MFA 800,
Graupner 600 eco,777, what would be the best set-up.
I also intend fitting a bow thruster.

Hi guys, has any one used the Model Slipway belt drive motors
for this model and if so what were the results or alternatives?

I stuck beefy motors in mine and had to use my own belt drive system using HPC gears products.

Did trial an 'O' ring design but it couldn't handle the torque.

Hi Dan I had a look at your build and you said you went for a 1 to 1 ratio
using 900 size motors can you remember how many teeth the gears had?
I loved your ideas and I hope you don,t mind me copying a few of them
it is a very nice build.

Hi John
Just a idea for you i have a wyeforce hull that i am going to build a free lance tug on the shaft's that come with the kit are a bit short
To be able to fit big can motor's so i plan to fit longer shaft's this will let you fit bigger can motor's direct drive

Thanks Jason, to do as you suggest I would have to remove the old shafts
and fit at least 11" tubes with 12"shafts it is an option though as I am refurbishing
her, I might even fit steerable Korts, that is another option.

cheers

You could just fit longer shafts.
Depending on the motor/shaft coupling you might need to provide a thrust bearing for reverse, but that could just be a long collar on the shaft to fill in the gap back to the tube.

Sorry John, not sure how many teeth it had. It doesn't really matter aslong as the belt and the cogs are the same teeth and the cogs are the same diameter.

I remember picking cogs which would fit the difference in height from the shafts to the motor shaft, halving it and a but more and then looking at suitable belts to fit.

Copy as you see fit, aslong as you do a better job and post the build!

Hi guys, Old shafts removed, new longer shafts fitted,
Size 900 motors fitted, direct drive no belts or cogs.
Just straight couplings.
Bow thruster now fitted and hull made good.
Photo,s to follow.

Sorry to side track your thread a little. The question is for Dan, are the 900 motors from MS as powerful as the Graupner 900's?. I am looking forward to your build of this tug John. I am building the Smit Nederland & the Fairmount Alpine but a stroke to my left hand has slowed me nearly to a stop.(I am left handed) I never associated "Dan's Boats" with you Dan, you do beautiful work & your builds are very helpful, thank you both, Mick B.

Hi guys, here are just a couple of photo,s of my progress, motors removed as I am getting the hull ready for spraying
and the props would be in the way. I have not shown the build steps as Dan more that covered those details
during his excellent build.         http://www.danwalker.co.uk/Harbour_Tug_html/tugpart6.html
