1/35 SCALE DUNKIRK JETTY DIO. 'LITTLE SOLDIERS'.
« on: January 13, 2014, 03:40:50 pm »

I have been working on this, on and off, for a while and have finally got around to finishing it.

It depicts two French lads standing on a destroyed jetty, around them are the remnants of British and French soldiers who made it to the jetty and radioed for help, they left helmets, weapons etc in their bid to escape. They look confused and unsure an innocence that is to be lost.

The jetty is made from polystyrene that has been coated and then airbrushed, the ladder rungs are staples, the telegraph pole is just an old boat mast toothpicks for the wire stays, small fishing line markers have been sanded down to create the insulators. The half sunken boat came off my trawler that got dropped. The water is silicone and then a black wash added to show fuel oil and give a general dark ugly feel to it. The equipment is 1/35 scale British weapons, with barrels and Jerry cans, the radio is the one from my Universal Carrier, the figures are Masterbox peasants with one lad in a Tommy tin hat and the other wearing a French Adrian pattern helmet.

You've captured the scene perfectly, you've got a real talent there, it really looks like the phoney war has truly ended with the boys expressions.
Fantastic work

I don't want to Nit Pick, but did we have Jerry cans in 1940? I thought that they were  German , ( Hence Jerry cans) The Allied only started useing them after the North African Campaign. Before that liquids came in square cans, unpainted.

You are correct, the Jerry cans are...Jerry cans, I had American versions too but thought that the cans could have been 'liberated' from a German vehicle. There is also British water can, the square one (these are painted in the Olive Drab).

I didn't know thats how they got their name!

I'm surprised we are still allowed to call them Jerry cans

Developed in Germany in the 1930's and designed to hold 20L of fuel. The design came about for ease of use without having to use awkward fillers, funnels etc.

It is a surprise that the term is still allowed to be used but then I suppose it is an iconic word that everybody knows what it is.

Word was used long before second world war to describe a porcelain bedroom item.

Oh, come on, I know that you have sheds full of bits, never get rid of anything that may, just may, come in handy.

A few years ago there was an exhibition of the models and props used in the Star Wars movies in the TV museum in Bradford. Spent ages spotting which bits had come from which kits to make some of them. The traveling scrapyard that R2D2 and C3PO were purchased from in "A new Hope" (Original film) was notable in the respect it was about 18" (450mm) long and had many car and motorbike bits on it, something you don't appreciate when you get a moving "Enlarged" shot. Sadly, the mirror finished SR71 rip off had suffered in transit with the foil peeling in places but the Star Destroyer (bout 5ft long) was superbly detailed.

I too have seen the Star Destroyer and agree with you the detail was over-whelming. As for the silver thing-should have been binned, along with the film.
