4mm milling cutter with 3.2mm shank
« on: September 09, 2013, 06:29:32 pm »

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get a 4mm end mill or slot drill with a 3.2mm (max) shank?
This is the biggest collet I can fit in my spindle, Proxxon MF70 milling machine.
Thanks

You may have a problem of finding cutters with a diameter larger than the shank in "Toy" sizes. They are available in the larger full sized engineering tooling but when you consider how cutters are made thereby hangs the problem.

Need to put a link in Rooster, this one :- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carbide-End-Milling-Cutter-Cutting-Tool-Flute-Diameter-From-1mm-4mm-Choice-/321171429327?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item4ac74f17cf

   Says it's a 3mm shank on a 4mm cutter but the picture doesn't show that.

If you look at the one on my posting, the shank and cutter are definitely  the same diameter. The one you show Nige SEEMS to be what you want but you need to check it on scrap material before committing it to serious work, as the flutes don't look as they will cut on their sides.

What I need this for is to open a 3mm hole to 4mm but I may have to offset the original hole hence the need for a cutter rather than a drill. Hopefully this will work but??????

Craig

it's a Pilgrim Sumo Replica

Built 1995 - 1997 %% ,
Sold 2001 when I no longer had anywhere to keep it. <:(

Notes taken from the info sheet that I used to put on the windscreen at Shows
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
History : The car is a replica of the A.C.Cobra sports car which was briefly built as a
collaboration between Carrol Shelby, an American Racing driver turned Racing Car Team
Owner, and AC Cars of Thames Ditton, in the 1960’s. The original cars were made in the
UK and shipped to Shelby’s works in California where he fitted light and powerful Ford
V8 engines of 289 cubic inches (4.7 litres) and later 427 cubic inches (7.0 litres).
The sheer performance of the car and the small number manufactured (only about 1000)
made it an instant classic, and 1960’s originals now command prices in the region of
$100,000 to $500,000. The A.C.Cobra holds the dubious honour of being responsible for
the 70 m.p.h. limit on U.K. roads after one car was tested on an unopened section of
the M1, it was clocked at 190 m.p.h. whilst being prepared for racing at Le Mans!
Kit : Galvanised Steel Chassis & Fibreglass Bodyshell made by Pilgrim Cars, Brighton.
Engine : Early Rover SD1 re-bored, crankshaft reground, new bearings, new 9.75:1 pistons
and rings. Real Steel Hurricane camshaft, new standard timing chain, new heavy duty
push-rods, new standard lifters, standard cylinder heads with standard S.U. Carburettors,
High output Facet Fuel Pump, Sierra Diesel radiator. Engine output 180 bhp., and the
car weighs 875 Kg. (about the same as a Ford Fiesta!).
Suspension : Rear axle & suspension Ford Sierra, Front Pilgrim/Ford.
Transmission : Rover 5-speed gearbox.
Build Period Rover SD1 purchased February 1995, Sierra purchased May 1995.
Car MOT tested, registered & on the road August 1997.
Total Cost : £8,000 + 900 cups of Coffee!.
Points Of Interest Unusual materials used in construction – Bottle opener,
Ironing board, discarded Council road-signs. The combination of Rover gearbox
and the Ford diff would have given an approximate road speed of 210mph
at 6000rpm in top gear! The reality was that it would cruise at around 2000rpm
in top at 70mph and return 35+mpg!
Wheels :- Image Wheels, Exhaust Manifolds :-Powerspeed.
Tonneau Cover :- Sheffield Trimming, Leather Seats :- Intatrim
Nice, looks great.  :-))
I built myself a Dax a few years back with a Chevy 350 V8 in it. I still own it but don't do many miles so have decided to keep it off the road for a while, typical we have a good summer after I decided to do that!
I wasn't trying to create a replica hence the Chevy motor and the white interior, more my interpretation of the car I wanted. Pilgrim are still going but have had a few issues recently. I guess the whole kit car market has shrunk though from what it once was.
Well,
The cutter came with a 4mm shank! After a couple of messages I have got my money back. Why do people give inaccurate descriptions of their goods?
Nige
P.S. That is a nice car!
