Some great images John....but one question  :o ...in virtually all cases, the second or following tug at the stern is also being driven astern?
In Kembla [where I live] 100,000 tonners are aided in berthing buy 4 tugs, but the stern tug is always facing fwd........even when used as a brake

Hi Derek.  This is how some do it on the river, but also some tugs also go bow to stern, also some tugs on
the bow go bow on, so that makes them bow to bow. Hope this helps.

   Regards

Yes John....that first image is the basic positioning we see here when berthing a 100,000 tonner   ...one tug ahead, one tug astern and one tug each on the stdb side fwd & aft.....On departure in ballast, three tugs are used but they swing the vessel 180 degrees to point it toward the harbour mouth......Derek
