Model boat clubs in or around chichester
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:03:45 pm »

Hi,

I live in Chichester and currently sail my modified victoria yacht on the littlehampton oyster pond when I can.   I was however wondering whether there are any other clubs nearer home suitable for yachts.  There used to be a Lakeside Model Boat club but this was disbanded I understand.  Do any of you sail your boats in or around chichester as there are a number of lakes - although I assume that you would need to get the owners permission first.

Cheers

Try on Goggle, Chichester Model Boat Club. They sail on the canal basin.

Hi guys thanks for the replys,
I didn't mention, but I am aware of the canal club - I just though that it was more suited to powered craft (surrounding buildings sheltering the wind)
I may well pop down to portsmouth once the weather improves  :-))

Hi "goingdown",

Did you ever make any further progress on this? I ask because I live in Littlehampton and am also looking for a local club... I've also used the oyster pond... and a couple of years ago I heard that there was a club in Littlehampton that met there once a week, but it was a Friday morning, so not very convenient when you work full time!

I'd really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks in advance!

By a strange quirk of fate I am actually just about to move to Littlehampton from Chichester and will have exactly the same issue.   I currently race rc yachts at the Portsmouth model yacht racing club (at the canoe club) and they meet on Saturdays;

Its a really nice  atmosphere and there are no club fees - just turn up and race.   I haven't been able to go much recently as I have been sailing my full size laser which takes priority in the summer.  It might make sense to start a Saturday / Sunday sailing session on the oyster pond for those that can't make the weekday times.

all the best

Hi Guy,

A Saturday/Sunday session sounds like it could be a good idea... I do seem to recall being told (a couple of years ago) that accessibility to the oyster pond was restricted in the summer because priority was given to the tourists using the pedalo's. So may have to make some more enquiries. I also made some enquiries about the use of the lake at Mewsbrook park. They said that it was fine to use, but said that there was a rather aggressive male swan in residence who was likely to model boats.... I'm also not sure about the accessibility of the water to launch, so I'll maybe make a recce in the near future to check it out...

By the way,  I also sail a Victoria...

All the best,
Steve.

Chichester is worth a look as it has quite a good following. I know of at least one member who restored a model of an Armoured Cruiser a few years back that rekindled my long long term smoulder into a full blown bonfire of model boating.

Steve,

I have often thought about Mewsbrook as a suitable place for rc boating.   I think the accessibility seems fine as the walkway is right next to the water.   I had hoped it was fresh water but it turns out it's salt water - however that's fine as I have replaced most of the rusting fittings on the Victoria with stainless steel or brass so its pretty corrosion resistant now.   We shall have to see how aggressive that swan is - hopefully some bread can keep him quiet  ok2 .  Let me know how your recces go

Although I have lived in Chichester for around 2 years I have never had a powered boat suitable as I feel its too sheltered for sailing.

Here's a picture of the Victoria (from PMYRC facebook page) below amongst a flotilla of dragon force 65s which it trounces in light airs but looses out in heavier winds.   Its got a carbon mast, mylar sails and sails etc which make a sizable difference.

I will probably take a trip down there at some point, even if it's just to see what goes on. I think that there are pictures of that cruiser on their website? If it's the one I'm thinking of it certainly does look impressive!

Hi Guy,

I didn't realise that Mewsbrook was salt water... that said, it's not the end of the world... I work in Lancing and have used the lake at Brooklands park quite a few times. This is also salt water, but I can get down there in a couple of minutes, from my office, and so it's ideal during my lunch hour for about 40 minutes of sailing.... access to the water is very good, especially on the East side. The only pain is having to pay & display for the car park...

My Victoria is pretty much "out of the box"! My only "mods" have been replacing the original rigging with stainless steel line, and I upgraded the sail servo and the sail arm....

...I am also about a quarter way through a build of a "model slipway" vosper RTTL.  :-)

One mod that is worth doing is to replace the mast joiner with a length of 8mm carbon tube which stiffens up that weak point.

I have 2 hydrofoils, one of which needs to be built and the other rebuilt and 2 submarines both unfortunately out of action and then I have my Dragonforce 65 and a Victoria.   I agree it would be nice to have a fresh water lake to use particularly for submarines as radio signal don't pentrate salt water particularly well.

But I think in littlehampton Mewsbrook is probably the best location to sail.

Selsey Model Boat Club sail Victoria yachts and have races on Sunday mornings from 10.00am until 12.00am, they are a nice group of people. The lake is fresh water but quite shallow, it would take a Dragonforce with the short keel or a Fiesta. General boating is Wednesday afternoons 4.00 to 6.00pm, a sort of bring what you got session. There is a speed limit on the pond of 5 knots, so no fast electrics! Plenty of parking in a pay and display car park in easy reach of the lakeside.

I'm building a Victoria and going to join the club soon, its £15.00 a year.

Sorry missed a bit...

I was contacted about a year ago by a chap who was going to set up a club at Mewsbrook, he said he'd contact me with details soon, but I haven't heard anything since! I have been to the Oyster Pond but only ever seen one person sailing.

The only other lakes I know are the Canoe Lake at Southsea (salt water) & Gosport Model Yacht Club (salt water) or Dabblers Model Boat Club (fresh water) mostly Fiestas.

Biggles,  thanks for the heads up it sounds like a good club and living in Littlehampton it doesn't look like it would be too far and it would be great to race with some other Victorias as I was only 1 of two at my last club (portsmouth model yacht racing club).   The fact that it uses fresh water is a nice bonus and would mean I could possibly use a submarine.......

Thanks

Its a good lake but the water isn't clear, a bit on the muddy side, but go along and have a look, I'm going to join very soon and sail my Victoria there when its finished!

Hi Jon,  yes I remembered you have one which is why I said 1 of two :-) .   I have moved to Littlehampton now which means its more of a trek but still worth it.   Saturdays are currently spent in a laser dinghy so it will probably be early winter before I venture back to Pompey.   Oh and whats the weed situation like now?

Cheers

No weed, its a weed free miracle ( that the council finally listened and stopped pumping kids splash pool water into a salt water lake..) a modern miracle!
