Lower bow protection
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:04:18 pm »

Hi guys,
Don't know if it's just me with this problem or whether others have had it, but I thought I'd ask anyway...

The local lake I sail at (being an old reservoir) has the water level at or just under the same level as the surrounding ground.
I've noticed the paint has been chipped off my boat on the bow, at the bottom, where the boat hits the pond side. I know the obvious answer is don't hurtle it into the side, but it tends to be more at slow speeds when coming back towards shore.
So, I was wondering if anyone has ever had any success in say, using a thin bit of metal (possibly stainless?) on the front of the bow, just to take the damage in a collision? Obviously I would paint it so it blends in, I was just curious if theres any other methods?
Cheers,
Steven

Most people I know build a small wood pier, or dock and lay it on
the water and tie it back to the shore. It keeps the model 10-15cm off the bank.
A simpler method is to just toss one of those foam "pool noodles" against the curb.

Of course this can go to extremes, as in Mike's case,....

I usually run a thin brass strip up the stem of my models to stop this happening. Best to embed square section in the stem piece if possible.

You could always cut the bottom out of a kiddies paddeling pool and place it round your model as you run it, this should protect against the edge of the pond. :-)
