What type of Hull
« on: March 03, 2014, 02:12:24 pm »

I bought this hull at Ellesmereport Show on Saturday, which I thought was a Trent?  However the measurements do not match the Trent?

The hull is 52" LOA, with a 17" beam.  I did then think it was a Arun from Models by design but it does not have any label inside and also although the same length it is to broad in the beam (a bit like me).

There are markings on the deck showing where fittings go and it look as if it had had fendering moulded in  but they have been cut/sanded off.

Any suggestions of class of boat please?

Thanks for that ginger.  I thought it might be but what was throwing me off was that on the Models By Design website, he is showing it as  Scale: 12th  Hull: 52 inch,  Beam: 15 inch?

If I had known on Saturday that it was an Arun, I could have spoken to him to check and put in an order for the superstore and what fittings he has?

Ah......hold on....
There are 2types of Arun 52' and 54' MBD sell both hulls BUT
If my memory is right the superstructure is rounded corners
Which is only for the 54' Aruns the 52' ones had square
Cornered superstructures

Hopefully one of the lifeboat experts will jump in and give some guidance :-))

Build it as something totally different Graeme..........and I have a set of the only plans in existant of her..........Sir William Arnold 52 - 02, as a staff coxs'n mate of mine said after her gold medal rescue in December 1989 of the Bonita........."she is the finest Arun I have ever sailed" and that was two days after the rescue when she had been shut down on one engine because the cox who carried out the rescue on limping to Brixham with the survivors told Poole that he thought that one of her engines had been displaced in the battering she took rescuing the crew.........

If you fancy building her as that boat, I have stacks of photos from the present owner of her, John O Regan from Cork Ireland

heres a few photos of her showing the beautiful lines of her superstructure............I always though that the designers of the Trent had gone some way to copy her.

If it's from Andy Grigg, I would have thought it
would have glassed in labels on each moulding.
All my Models by design mouldings have the label.

Thanks for the offer Neil, I must admit she does look the part.   I was thinking of building her as  52 - 08 Joy and John Wade again based at Yarmouth I.O.W. like the SGE which I am building now.

I think your plans show the early version of the Arun, if I am correct the later ones had the flying bridge moved to the front of the cabin as present today?  But as you said it would be different and I do have a 1/16 Arun which I was going to convert to the Yarmouth boat so can still do so?

I take it will mean me making the superstructure from scratch, which will be a challenge, so I think I will take up your kind offer of the plans if you could pm me so we can sort something out?

Ned, The lack of a label in the hull was one of the things that raised further doubts about being a MOD hull as like you the few hulls I have bought from Andy always had his label in them.  If it is one of his, and I don't know anything about casting except watching blogs on this site, but perhaps it was an early one or even a trial as it appears to only have a gel coat covering the markings on the deck.  I think you can see how thin they are by one of the shots of the bow where I stuck my finger through?  But as I only paid £50.00 for her I can't complain.

Sorry Neil, I too have a set of plans for 52 02. Got them off lovely Gladys Green of the RNLI plans dpt in 1972. I still say it was the best L/B there has been. Great model to sail, Nemesis

Graham  Hi, An " Arun" hull has two semi tunnels for the props and shafts, they go from the Transom to nearly half way up the hull . Nemesis

I have this morning been in touch with Models By Design and they seem to confirm my concerns that due to the lack of any label that this hull is most likely a copy of one of their Arun hulls.

I am now not sure what to do with it as I am not keen on copies as trading is hard enough without someone copying their investment and time in producing products. >:-o
