Extend Prop shaft Tamar Lifeboat or alternative solution!
« on: March 22, 2014, 02:35:32 pm »

Hi All,
I seem to have installed a set of prop shafts that now dont have sufficient clearance to fit the suggested 45mm props to my 1/16th Tamar, dont ask!
Just wondered if I can reverse engineer a solution by an extension m4 male/female extension of about 10mm, go for 35mm props or rip the whole lot out and start again. :((
Any ? please.

just get some longer internal shafts made, leave the outer tube alone,, you could get a bush made up to fit over the 10mm extra internal shaft so it dosent look a bodge....speak to steve who makes the shafts up, his works very neat... :-))

Hi Neil,
From the outside I would either need an extension piece of @ 10mm or put longer internal shafts in.
Cant believe I made that error as I dont think 35mm props will deliver the right combination as opposed to 45mm, motors are Graupner ECO 600s.

I personally wouldn't want to "bodge" a grand's worth of kit for a "hapeth of Tar"

it's a fairly easy enough process to remove some prop shafts to put them in again  at the correct angle to take the 45mll props.

just post some pics of it inside as well as outside and I'll tell you how to do it. neil.

Rich,

You might well want to follows Neil's advice anyway and reposition the shafts anyway but I'm running 35mm props an ECO 600s on my 1/16 Trent.  It's a different boat of course but they work better then the 40mm props I had; same if not better top end, better running times and slightly cooler.

I'm not going to claim to know a specific formula but there's a point at which running bigger props becomes a struggle for the motor so it runs slower and less efficiently.  So running a smaller prop allows the motor to run faster.

If you can reposition the shafts though it'll allow you to try different prop sizes.

Phill...am in agreement with you about the props......the boat shouldn't need more than 35 mm props for a 1:16 scale boat......I was thinking it was a 1:12 scale....much bigger in both length and beam.......I'd just try it with the 35mm ones before you do much more building.....if they are ok save you the time and effort to take the old ones out. neil.

I run 2 x 35mm props on my 36.5" sea plane tender with two small 400 motors at 9.6v and the boat goes like a rocket

I built a 1:16 Slipway Tamar and am sure I used 35mm props which run well. Incidentally, in real life the Tamar uses 5 bladed props so I would go for 30mm or 35mm 5 bladed ones. I used Graupner ECO600 motors too.
