HMS Solbay
« on: April 07, 2014, 09:48:52 pm »

Hi, Has anyone built the deans marine HMS Solbay, I have just started the build but I have come across a problem.
The cut outs in the decks do not match the pictures in the directions, I am going on holiday for a couple of weeks so I will contact Deans Marine on my return.
I am taking my laptop so will look for any replies, Thanks, Mac.

I built this shortly after it was brought out. Instructions were better than some kits but still pretty bad, inaccuracies on the computer printed pastic card were plentiful. The secret is to use the plans and measure twice or more and dry fit before gluing. Use the centre line of the ship as your datum and mark up the deck with the centre line.
In spite of the issues you will have it does make a good looking model that performs well on the water.
I'll keep an eye on your build thread and if I can help I will although it was a about 10 years since I built it.

I was given a Solebay Kit to use as a donor kit for HMS Aisne and any bits of superstructure that I used from
the kit were re-measured and re-marked with a very fine indelible pen and then cut out.  I thought the printed lines
on the plasticard as supplied were far too thick.

Interesting point with the thick lines - are you supposed to go for the inside or outside of the line (is there a difference when looking at windows which will become holes, and the edges of panels which will be the outside) or just guess at the middle?  I am looking in some trepidation at an Empire Susan kit.
