chichester canal cruise easter 2014
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:49:50 am »

As Easter Monday is very soon to be upon us, just a quick reminder for those who fancy an event with a bit of a challenge, we are again running model boats along the navigable section of the Chichester ship canal, the event is open to any electric / scale / sail model. Models will cruise the length of the canal with the operators following along the canal tow path. A rescue vessel is accompanying the flotilla in case it's required ! hope to see many new faces , of modellers having fun ! jon

Jon, Can I ask whereabouts the start is on the canal, I would like to come along and have a watch (I don't have a boat ready yet so would be just me I'm afraid)
I'm in Eastbourne so would be coming along the A27.

The start point is at the basin.
If you are coming in via the A27, you want to take a right turn at the Stockbridge Roundabout, A286 Chichester and Midhurst. Carry on down about 300 yards, straight through the lights and then turn right by The Waterside Inn. Basin is on your right, pay and display parking along the pond edge, may actually be 2 hour parking, not too sure.

Depart the basin at 12pm, postcode ( for the pub! ) is PO19 8DT.
Jon would have responded however he claims to have been driving this morning, apparently 6am. Dont believe a word of it!

This all sound like fun to me. Is there room for a 1/16th Slipway Tamar ?
IF the weather is fine then its may be worth the trip from Stevenage to join you all.  Do I need to book in? If yes where and when do i do it.

Because I now have four non finished, two started subs I had off Rich from here, The Bugsier kit arrived last Tuesday again bought off this forum and my Model Slipway Vliestroom which is about 95% finished but not had it's maiden voyage yet, would be a bit embarrassing to stick her on the canal for the first time and watch it go down  {-)

Yay! SWMBO and the mother in law have now moved the 'family' meal to sunday so I can come along and join in. Pribably sink/burn the motor out/have some kind of drama or make the usual neebie mistakes  :embarrassed:

OK I needs some more info about this event.
So we take the boats down the canal , How do we get back to where we started?
Do I need to get the wife to drive the car to the other end or do i run the boat back up the canal
If someone would like to pm me a phone number so i can have a chat on Monday night this week to get the details. I want to join in the fun but some more detail to a first timer would be a big help.

Oh and another thing how long dose it take and how far is the walk?

Sundays trail with the new motor and prop went very well. Lots more power at low revs and I can now stop her on the spot. Going full ahead the springer tries to become a sub but she trundels along at walking pace ok and the bateries lasted much longer than the previous 20 minutes. I did not get a good guage of her endurance as I was chatting with the owner of a nice HMS Fearless which seemed to have more electronics and gismos than a F1 car.

Is Giles still a member of the Chichester club? He has an armoured cruiser that he restored a couple of years back and told me lots about the club when I saw him at Chi model engineers. I have moved to Somerset so sadly could not join you (Though I am in a similar position to Ian in having lots of boats under way but none in sailoing condition!)

Looking forward to the day. Currently faffing around with the springer trying to fit better batteries and tidy the electrics up.
Now realised  there may have to be some improvements to the superstructure to fit it all in {:-{

That was a great day out
A nice cruise / weed clearing trip. My little springer died 1/3 of the way into the return leg - I think I cleared weed from the props about 15 times! The second set of batteries died 20 minutes later - does help if I connect both batteries rather than just the one but it is my boat to learn on. Looking forward to next year - already have a few ideas

Well we made it all the way down the canal and back with only a bit of weed round both props.  :-))
Can I say a BIG thank you to all the folks that made this event possible. I had a lovely day and the M25 was clear on the way home.
I want to do it again next year and see if i can get lots more Stevenage MBC members to join in as well.

But hay just moved house and had one or two boxes to unpack.
Will have to try and make the next one with my springer and barge

Great images and I recognised one of those taking part! I am pleased that the day went well. Batteries do seem to be tinkers don't they? I am just getting into RC and I am trying to unravel all the different types and their charging/storage peccadiloes. I must read the relevant topics again on the forum.

Will any footage be uploaded on Youtube?
