Algerine class Minesweeper
« on: May 03, 2014, 03:45:27 pm »

After many long delays am finally getting to grips with a 1/48 Algerine based on a Sirmar hull which I hope to power by a twin steam layout.

Could someone please advise on the correct configuration of the E/R skylights on these vessels.
It is a long time since I last saw a model and photographs are hard to decipher. My plans indicate two, one each port and starboard.
I have assumed they had coamings- and if so, what height?
Are the coamings angled and are there opening "lids" as found on other skylights?

Many thanks in anticipation

If you haven't already seen this, http://www.hnsa.org/doc/plans/j337.pdf.  The drawing show  two rows of three skylights either side of the compass platform.  I'd venture a guess that they probably sloped downward torwards the side of the ship.  The height looks to be about the same as the bottom rail of the handrail but the G/A drawing doesn't have a scale marked on it.
As to their appearence I should imagine they looked some like these as fitted to a Flower class corvette. HTH

A sadly now late friend of mine was a stoker on the Romola during the early -> mid fifties, I recall him showing me a photo of himself beside those engine room lights, my further recollection was that it was remarkably similar to the Flower Class arrangement.

Not alot of good I know - but there don't seem to be any/many good photos of an Algerine in that area

Many thanks to those who have volunteered info regarding E/R skylights.

Re. John Lambert plans, it was his plan that gave me pause and persuaded me that there are two sets, port and starbd.  What I could not ascertain were if these were raised on coamings.  I believe they would have been and also sloped downwards outboard, but that is a guess. I'll probably go with this arrangement.
Sometimes they seem to be just trunks set into the deck with a mushroom vent on top.

Again, many thanks for your info.

Might be worth a phone call/letter to John Lambert, I've always found him very approachable  :-))
