Taycol Meteor motor / ESC
« on: August 06, 2014, 05:12:58 pm »

Can this vintage Tacol "Meteor" 6volt motor be wired to take modern ESC with a reversing function?

This motor has a mechanical reversing lever (C) and supply connections (A) and (B)

The reversing lever selects different sets of windings which energise the electromagnet plates in opposite polarities so if there is any change of doing this electronically then you would need to substitute an electronic switch for the mechanical one. I did know the details once but it was a long, long time ago....

It is possible but not simple, some basic knowledge of electronics would be useful. There is a site that explains all about these motors, well worth a read.

Thanks for the information, the Taycol site has explained the wiring details I was looking for, I will have a re-think of the way ahead.

I did this a while ago and it worked very well. A note of caution tho. They create a lot of interferance, so I used ferite cores on the power leads to the motor, and put the maximun possible distance between the receiver and arial and the motor. Worth the trouble to use a great bit of old kit. After all, these motors worked with the old gear we used in the 60s so they can still be used now.

Two of these motors in parallel have been running in a 6 foot long  old model liner which did not have any rc control, it has now had a new 2.4 radio system fitted  which does not have any problems with interference, it was fine going forward but the lack of reverse would make a difference. May be taking the Taycol motors out and replacing them with suitable new modern motors could be practical and would solve the esc connection problems.

Using the original motors is cool, replacing them with modern ones will certainly be more practical.  If the Taycols do get used, bear in mind that while 2.4GHz is allegedly immune to interference, other folks' gear might not be.  And interference doesn't just get into the system via the radio aerial.  A fearsome enough level at close range can find its way in through more or less any bit of unattended wire.

2.4 gig is certainly better than 27meg at interference rejection, and is almost universal now. I wouldn't worry about the effect on other models, as long as the Taycol is properly suppressed. I've seen and used many Taycols and never seen a problem.
As for using a modern esc, as I said, no problem, just follow the instructions in the link, it's simple and it works.
As an aside, has anyone noticed that the spell check on here wants to change Taycol to tackle. That would change the tone of these posts and possibly get me banned!

I have run a couple of Taycols with modern radios and still have my Sea Queen with Supermarine Special. I recently converted that from 27Meg to 2.4G and the control definitely improved. It has all the various forms of suppression including capacitors, ferrites, twisted power leads etc but it still used to hesitate if put on full power and hard rudder at the same time. Going to 2.4 has cured that and made it much smoother to operate. The last time I ran one of the smaller series motors like the Meteor I just used a small servo to work the mechanical Forward/Reverse switch. Although there was no speed control it was not hard to find a prop which gave a nice forward speed and the way the wiring is done in the motor gives a slower reverse. In theory with a multi channel radio it should be possible to hook up an ESC to control speed and a servo to work the mechanical reverse switch. All much more fun to fiddle with than a modern motor! Cheers, Ian.
