I don't want to get my boat wet...'
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:19:06 pm »

:P I heard the daftest statement at the lake side today, at about 11am one of the guy's came out with this gem "as it is starting to rain I am packing up don't want to my boat wet" after many years of model boating I thought that was the general idea, reminds me of an old guy years ago who brought his boats to the lake every Sunday but they never went into the water just sat on the side he didn't want to get them wet either, strange but it takes all types as long as they enjoy it that is all that matters,    Ray. :((

Rather depends on what sort of boat it is. I have known people with very high quality scale boats refuse to run them in the rain and I would think twice about running mine too. A splash or two on the deck from normal running is one thing but heavy rain can ruin the paintwork on upperworks as it can be very difficult to remove the resulting water stains. Unfortunately rain in the UK is not just water, it has other stuff in it too, not infrequently Saharan sand as a look at your car after a heavy shower will show. You can wipe if off a flat surface but when it gets into all the nooks and crannies of fine detail it is almost impossible to remove.

So perhaps the guy was being sensible really!

I agree with Colin. For those who love highly detailing models a lot of the materials in fabricated detail are not submersible without permanent damage. Rigging, ships boats, bridge work, etc. Individually laid deck planking is vulnerable to seepage and lifting.  Living near an airport means rain contains large amounts of aero chemicals that rot and stain everything.

You think you have it bad with Saharan sand in the UK? Every two days I have to vacuum the pool because of it settled on the bottom, each morning the car is covered in spots of it where the dew has settled and then dried!

Spain- who'd have it? %% {-)

Thanks for the comments guys, here in this part of Surrey the biggest problem is hard water and rain water is not as bad as what's in the lake, the lake water will leave quite bad stains on the boat if you let it, I now wipe the boat down with some distilled water at lake side to remove stains before they get a grip, this idea came from some one on Mayhem and it works! as for the rain in Spain I bet you don't get too much to worry about , what happens to me is I clean the car on a bright sunny morning and bingo the sky's open that's England for you,   Ray.

When I was flying RC Planes there were several guys who would arrive Sunday morning, put their models together, do all the pre flight checks and then just leave them on the Flight Line until it was packing up time then they would be taken to bits and go off home. We called them "Hangar Queens",  the Planes, not their owners!!

I am just trying to imagine one of our recent sudden downpours where everyone else has packed up and gone home, leaving one die-hard enthusiast in full sou'wester gear with his hands and Tx in a plastic bag determined to get a full sailing session in, and ask myself the question "Why?".  I guess it takes all sorts . . . %%

Hi guys, many moons ago whilst at the old Plumpton racecourse show a guy covered his model over with a large sheet of polythene when we had a shower. Understandable you might think but it was a sub! :-X
No comment.
Cheers Chris Monk.

Hi RAAArtygunner, I have run out of the sea when it has rained, but it was to rescue my clothes and towel, which were getting wet.

I was one of those weird types sailing my Springer the rain a while ago. Mind you, I had gone to the lake on my motorbike so was getting wet whatever I did so thought I might as well carry on as at least I had the lake to myself and the 25-30 mph winds meant I could get it surfing. Also had the bonus of the rain washing the lake substance (whatever it is in Canoe Lake in Portsmouth has little to do with water) off the boat before it got chucked in the topbox for a soggy ride home.
