Hi would anyone have any information on running a martin howes and baylis p b 2 steam engine I have gust got this engine and in all honesty it ,s not been run for a long time and was never cleaned before being stored  , it turned over very stif ,initally I gave it a good clean and a good oiling and ran it on air it needed about 40 / 50 psi to get it running but after about 6 ten minute runs with plenty of light oil  on all moving parts and in the air supply it seems to be running fine even down to about  5/10psi .so has anyone any information on general running on steam ie lubrication ,psi it should run at ,prop size, and potential model length I would be most grateful kind regards Allan

Here's a reply I got from pettyofficernick when I asked a lubrication question about my PMR 8M:

 "Hi Cal, fill the lubricator at the start of a run, when you top up gas, boiler etc, drain the condensate from the lubricator at the same time either with the drain cock at the bottom or with a syringe through the top where you fill it if it is awkward to gain access to the drain. 1 1/2 turns in the needle valve works fine for me ( the screw with the black rubber ring round it, and yes, it should move) Knowing when to fill the lubricator will become clear when you start to run the engine , just keep an eye on the oil level until you know how long it lasts. I usually get about 3 x 1/2 hour runs from one filling. Gas, water and oil consumption will become apparent once you get used to running the engine.

Hi Allan,
 
Remember, you need to use steam oil in the displacement lubricator(cylinder lubrication) when running on steam... not car engine oil.
Steam oil grade 460 should be about right for that engine.
 
External moving parts and bearings can be lubricated with light machine oil. (20w)

Alan.......that's appears to be an interesting steam regulator  :o

The linkage connection must need to be set very accurately as it appears to be designed for a start position of Zero steam/RPM ....then progressively moved in one direction to max steam/RPM,  but return the linkage arm to the start position then add negative movement will port inlet steam to exhaust  :embarrassed:

Or am I viewing this upside....being in OZ....... {-) ... or is it a method of blowing down boiler pressure remotely?.......Derek

kick-starter arm for direction of rotation?  How does it disengage(by extending beyond radius teeth)?   cool engine.

Hi took video of engine running on steam today on my i pad, got it on to utube but it would not upload for some reason never done this before so it may be my lack of knowledge wish i was 17 not 70 ,however the engine ran really well no steam leeks reverses well and very powerful if you look at the second picture down you will see the regulator with the lever underneath for speed  a 1/4 turn needed from stop to full throttle, the lever to the front of the engine is the reversing lever this works well but i remember reading somewhere the engine should be st-oped before reversing so i did that there are 2 lubricators for steam oil and oil cups on crankshaft thanks for the interest ,regards Allan
