information on Real Yachts needed
« on: July 17, 2007, 10:32:00 pm »

heya, bit of an odd one this is.

I am going to put navigation lights onto a Lidl special yacht,  (basically a Ripmax Sea Lite / University Club), the model is a scale replica of a 13m sailing yacht.  To do this, I want some pictures of where the yachts have their navigation lights, not sure if the lights are going to be mock up lights from reade plastics or working lights yet, ATM i am doing some prior research, so help would be apreciated.

on the sails, what would be the suffix for a yacht of 13m in size, or does the RYA number's suffix have nothing to do with the size?

Yours, Mark. (Ghost in the shell)

Most common place is on the hard top of the cabin port and starboard , mast head all round white and a running light in the stern

Hi Ghost
Here are some pics of Marisco Madness. She is 37 feet long and is a racer/cruiser. The light fit is as follows. Three sepperate navigation lights (Red, Green and White) at deck rail leval. They are used in conjuction with the (White) steaming light half way up the mast when the boat is under power. At the masthead and hard to see is the Tricolour. This is a single light with three colour lens for sailing. The idea is that it uses a lot less of the battery power and is easier to see. A lot of yachts will sail and steam with both sets of nav lights on for safety.

The previous yacht we sailed had the prefix K but was changed to GBR, I'm not too sure what the rules are.

Holmsey.

It's illegal to show steaming and sailing lights simultaneously - and very confusing for other vessels!

should be easy to do.

as I have removed the battery box on the lil one I could feed the wires through the old bung hole.

so what you are saying is Tricol at top, sidelights on main cabin, bi-col at bow, white at stern, with white (disconnected - display only) on the front of the main mast just above spreader?

The bow lights could be a split red/green or two single lights on the rails, see pic. Not sure about the cabin roof, maybee for motor sailers.

if on the railss they could get damaged, also on the roof would make them easier to seal against water getting into the hull!

That would be fine, obviously the lights only shine in the correct arcs, also you would not need the cabin lights if you had the bow ones.

Yes, you are quite right, and it's a bl***y stupid thing to do too!

An oncoming large vessel then has no idea as to your ability to manouever out of his way. It's people who do this who get yotties a reputation for incompetence and encourage the govenment to impose even more rules and regulations.
