Rudder question
« on: November 16, 2014, 10:01:47 pm »

I'm in the process of converting a Revell USS Wasp to rc. The rudders do not look up to the job. They may be scale but they are very small and fragile. If I make my own replacements approx 50% larger will there be any steering problems?
Thanks,  Chris.

Chris ....answer in short is probably no........ %)

Just remember the function of the rudder is relative to the resultant of water flow over the rudder surface....however in this case is also a function of the higher velocity of the water column created by the propeller.................

Another point to consider is if you increase the blade surface area by 50%.......you should also consider increasing the rudder blade vertical supporting pin or element by a similar %.....

Keep us posted............Derek

Agree with Derek.

All the elements of the boat will scale, but the water molecules stay the same. You will need to increase the rudder size. The smaller the scale, the bigger the add on needed.
One way to play with this is to stick a piece of plastic card to the rudder using double sided tape. Then a bit of trial and error with shaping and re-sizing, to find what will be effective.
