Very nice Martin. I was intrigued by the spelling of Welsh as Welch in the third photo. Is that an older form of the word? When you say local museum, is that Peterborough?

Seeing Australia follows English military traditions, customs etc, my guess is, that because the word Welch is spelt that way, and seeing it is a ''Royal" Regiment, it would need royal consent/assent to change the spelling.

However, you would not change the spelling, as it would alter the history and traditions, the 23rd Regiment on the order of battle, not to mention the Regiments accoutrement's, battle honours, standards, etc.

Very nice display and good to see, should be more off it, well done Fusiliers.

Not exactly!  the Regiment most involved at Rorke's Drift was the 2nd Battalion (Warwickshire)/24th Foot who were later amalgamated an became the South Wales Borderers and then The Welsh regiment and finally the Royal Regiment of Wales.  Lt. John Rouse Merriott Chard, who was the senior officer, was Royal Engineers.  Also awarded the VC were Comissary Officer Dalton and the Surgeon Reynolds.

The Regimental history link above, reply 8, shows the linking of the  24th of foot and Zulu wars as TailUK explained.

Have the movie Zulu on DVD which makes for good watching, accurate rendition of events ????

Overall the events are true but as usual the devil is in the detail. Descendants of some of the enlisted men have said their portrayal is inaccurate particularly the man played by James Booth. Also, it is claimed that the afrikaans policeman actually directed the defense not John Chard. Finally, the Zulus gave up the fight because the British relief column was closing in and they didn't want to be caught from behind.


I've read all this in various articles and have no way, without my own research, of confirming or denying any of it. I think the film is a marvelous piece of cinema. I only need to see it 10 more times and I get my own bravery award.
