Marmaduke II: The duck.
« on: January 01, 2015, 07:31:45 pm »

This is a little project that has got to be done! Marmaduke the original was built buy my late uncle about 25 years ago. while clearing out his house a couple of months ago we discovered Marmaduke had fallen behind the sofa and suffered major damage:
as a result I brought him home and stuck him on a shelf.
On Christmas day I opened a box that said 'live animal' on the side. I thought someone had brought a rabbit or some other pet for my children. (we have two dogs, a cat and two horses. I do NOT need any more animals to feed! >>:-( ) Inside, much to my relief, was Marmaduke II. So here is the rebuild!

I started by stripping and testing the various components. The list of working parts include: the motor, the r/c transmitter and receiver, two servos and the led eyes. The battery pack and the cells are all knackered as is a switch. The prop shaft was seized but left in a tub of diesel over night enabled me to pull the shaft from the case and clean away the corrosion with some wire wool.

The next part was to cut away the weight from the bottom of the new duck. then I marked and cut away the top access to the interior. I have cut the slot for the prop shaft and now I'm ready to start on the rudder. This is where I have hit a snag! The original duck had the rudder less than 1/8th away from the tip of the prop. Should I move the shaft forwards or the rudder back? or do I put it in the same place?

The next challenge is going to be the filling of the molding impressions on the underside. Has anyone any ingenious ideas on how best to do this without adding 2st of epoxy?

I think you are going to need a new body and start fresh. The plastic in a 25year old decoy willI have lost its  integrity.   I have an old RC goose that I have to redo because the plastic has got very brittle.

Gerald.

 Hi pete.
if you are tight for space, could you not use a kort instaid of a rudder.   Seen them on westbourne or cornwall mods site.

A man in our model engineering club built this on . A vertically mounted propeller in a lobster back bend which can rotate in all directions and acts like a water jet . The head rotates and a sound unit makes it quack . We thought it was a little  " quacker " !

Time for an up duck! Things have progressed some what.... I have worked out how to make my pics acceptable from my iPad %%

The duck now has the props haft installed and the rudder plus servo. Currently I'm sanding the underside ready for filler to get rid of the molding holes. After much debate and a lot of help on here I have gone with an easy sand filler with a final sealing coat of epoxy.. Hope this is the right choice but hey ho we'll see!
The motor that has come from the original duck still works but does not have any id on it apart from 'como drill' so choosing a new ESC is going to be fun. I'm planning to run on 9.7v so I'm sure I'll find something! Anyone who can shed some light would be great but I have a feeling that this may have come from a 'diner' when my uncle built the original!

A chap turned up at the Norwich Sub Weekend last year with a diving duck...chap by the name of Paul Brassington. It's a clever beast, has twin rudders, twin motors and shafts and independent dive planes, very clever.

Diving duck?! Wow! Would be great to see a pic of that! However I'm going to stick to the basics at the moment :embarrassed:  maybe in a few decades I'll be able to attempt it!!!
Currently trying to keep the dust down in the front room while I sand all this filler!  {:-{ {:-{  I think I may be in trouble when SWMBO gets back.......... :-X

Remind me in the morning and I'll post up some photos of the diving duck, and somewhere in my files of stuff I've got some video footage of it in action.

If you give us the diameter of the motor we can probably give you an idea of what it is. Como Drills is another name for MFA I believe.

Two days of sanding and filling and I think I've cracked it %%  the front room is covered in a fine layer of white dust :embarrassed:  and mrs is about to do something with a can of furniture Polish...... All in all quite a productive couple of days {-) {-) {-) .  Next is the resin top coat.... Can you add a colour to this? If so what and how?!!!

Just a quick update! Marmaduke now resembles a charicture from the mummy returns %% %%  all sanded, masked and ready for paint. This is a chance for me to try out a Christmas present in the form of a new spray gun and compressor. My normal one is more suited to tractors and lorries not small detail!

This may be interesting!! %) %) %)

Marmaduke has now got a Matt black bottom O0  and I've been playing with the dark arts.... A lot of fun as I've discovered an old motor that I had stashed in a box in the back of the workshop %% :-))  it's one of http://http://www.sriremotetoys.co.uk/125000010-clash-electric-motor-p-1769.html these! Should go quite well me thinks!!!

The rest is as you see complete with lights, eye lashes, glasses ect!

Will have to wait until next weekend to try it >:-o
