Hello, my first post having found this excellent site! I've started my first ever ship build having decided I needed a change from plastic kits. I've made slow but steady progress on my 1/96 HMS Plymouth based on the Scale Warship hull. Running gear etc is in and appears to be ok although I'm getting a sound similar to feedback from the motors (any ideas?). I've found the build on this site of HMS Yarmouth and this is a real inspiration for me. If anyone can point me towards a similar build it would be much appreciated.

Might be my build of Yarmouth you are referring to. Not sure that it was that an inspired build lol but if it helps you then great. You might also like to try this link:

This is a build log of Brighton and it had a lot of great pics and tips. You need to watch the top weight on these they are quite heavy up top and you will need to think carefully about hull access. I didn't make my forward access as wide as I should have so it was a tight fit. You might like to check out Scale Warship brass etched bridge GD platform etc as they are very good. The resin mast they do is good but very heavy so if you use it drill it out to save some weight.

Hi Mike,
It certainly was your build I was refering to, looks fantastic! Many thanks for the tips and links, they are a great help. I'm sure I'll be back to you mutiple times if you don't mind! A quick question about the decks, how did you go about getting the correct shape / fit?

The cammet hull which I think is now the scale warship had the round down sides moulded in and a lip of about 12 mm extending. I straightened the edges by sanding so they were fairly clean and straight as I could get them. I used a car template fitted under the edges inside and used a pen to trace the shape. I then transferred this to the plastic sheet. For the focastle break where it is rounded I used separate plastic card pieces which then gave it a sharp edge. but once set I literally sanded as best I could to get the join rounded using plastic filler every so often so it eventually got a slighted rounded join.

Welcome to the Forum.

This sounds like the 'whine' that comes with some Speed controllers. This noise cannot be cured effectively, but does reduce on acceleration. It becomes unnoticeable out on the lake.

Thanks again Mike for your help. The chaps at Scale Warships did supply a deck template but after tidying up the hull etc I think your approach is best.

Ken, thanks for your comments. I'm using a Mtroniks ESC, Viper Marine 25, would you expect this to make the noise?

Alex, hopefully Peel Ports don't own all the sailing lakes on the Wirral!! Looking forward to getting an HMS Plymouth on the water though, the real one was badly treated I think. I'll look to post progress as and when.

The deck fittings etch sheet that scale warships does is very good for detail such as tie downs for the flight deck, ports etc and breakwaters. There is a lot that doesn't get used such as the names for all the class and the Whitby's but its worth considering.

I have quite a bit of the etch from Scale Warship and I agree, it's very good. I also have most of the fittings from Sirmar so I'm going to be very busy. I've also found a 1/96 Wasp!! Comes from a company from Shapeways.

Just about to start drilling out 50+ port holes!! Any suggestions to what you put behind them to stop water getting in, if you put anything in at all.

Steady if unspectacular progress being made. She floats, which is a great relief with only a little water ingress from one of the rudder holes. This has been plugged! Must find a way of posting pictures on this site!
A fantastic find has been CNC Models website. Charles @ CNC has been kind enough to develop the superstructure for my Type 12, arrived today! This should save many hours of having to build all the superstructure from scratch but still leaves you with plenty of detailing work to do. The website is well worth a visit.

Yes, but its the motor windings making the noise when presented with the pulses of power from the ESC rather than the ESC itself. Sometimes the vibration gets transmitted into the hull structure and gets amplified, this can be much reduced by mounting the motors resiliently (rubber washers under the fixing screws). Some ESCs operate at a higher frequency, and humans don't hear the result. I expect that passing dogs might.

Perspex/clear plastic rod can be purchased and cut to length. Then inserted/glued in position. Remember to mask the portholes before painting.

Or the clear acetate sheet cut to suitably sized squares that you seal around the edges so as not to smudge the visable area behind the porthole, a dollop of glue on the corners till secure then a small dollop every so often along an edge until it is sealed, just be careful of the capillary effect of the glue being drawn to the small gap between the sheet and the boat.

Great photos, many thanks. Progress is slow which is frustrating, work seems to get in the way! Really enjoying the challenge & am very impressed with the accessories / parts available from a number of suppliers eg the oerlikon from modelling timbers, a work of art!! Pictures to follow.
