Any of you chaps built a Model Slipway 10 or 4 hatch coaster kit?

Any hints, tips or advice on the building of it would be gratefully appreciated. First question...what motor/battery combination do you recommend?

I want to leave the hatch covers off and build a false floor covered in fine aquarium gravel, with maybe a working JCB on the deck, just to be different. I'm thinking of installing a water pump powered bow thruster as well...what do reckon? Is a bow thruster needed?

Ok...over to you guys.

I haven't built one myself but sail a friends once and I would recommend a bow thruster for handling and looks the part to

The plan shows a geared MFA500 motor with a 40mm 3-blade prop, but if you want simplicity (and quiet!) then fit a Mabuchi 555 on 12v. I'd advise using a NiMH pack as you might decide it's a bit too quick and want to reduce the voltage to something in between 6v and 12v. A bow-thruster would be a very good addition as the model is only single-screw and quite long. The standard Graupner or Raboesch units should do fine.

DM...g'morning, and thanks for the invaluable advice...I don't really like geared motors, they sound awful to me, so the 555 will be the one.
I've got a 12v nimh 4600 pack somewhere in THAT cupboard...one more coffee and I'll go take a look for it.
Bow thruster...yep, sounds good to me, I'll investigate the ones you mention.

Yes, I did...and replied to it. That's how mine are done, you are spot on with your diagram.

Hi U33 bow thrusters a good idea found mine steered better with an larger rudder as the stern took long time to answer the small rudder ...regards Bill...

Bill...funny you mention a bigger rudder, I found a picture earlier on of a coaster with an enlarged rudder, made from clear perspex.

Gazou the model is 1-50 scale the wind and water are 1-1 scale on our 7 acre lake today the scale wind speed would have been1250 miles per hour sometimes a little help is required....Bill.......

I was pulling your leg very gently (English idiom). Your model is/was very well made but definitely to your own style.
My point is that if Richard wishes to fit a bow-thruster then we should not criticise, especially when it will make the model easier for him to operate. That is his personal style. I believe he has very stiff joints in his hands, caused by his extreme old age............................

Chaps...I want to be able to enter my local club's steering regattas with the coaster, hence the fitting of bow thrusters and and enlarged rudder. I don't build 'scale' models, I build what's loosely termed 'semi scale' or 'stand off scale'...if it looks like a coaster when it's out on the water, then I'll be a happy chappy.

And as for you, Mr M...you saucy young sprout, sir! Extreme old age indeed...cough cough

Hi U33, I have one of these coasters but I bought it built and did some refurbishment on it. The one thing I have noticed is that the motor is too high and she really does rock and roll. I will post some pictures of the internals as soon as I can but at the moment I am a bit snowed under. Cheers Graham. PS One of our club members has successfully fitted a working digger to his but I don't know if he is on here.

Strange. I've not heard of this with Coaster before. I've just checked the plans and the geared motor C/L is 27mm below the waterline; this to line up with the propeller shaft which is parallel with the waterline and the bottom of the hull. A direct-drive motor would sit 7mm lower in the hull but that wouldn't have much effect. The cause of the problem is more likely to be side-wind on that tall superstructure, but there's nothing to be done about that. Perhaps two battery packs laid against opposite sides of the hull would dampen the rolling.
