« on: February 18, 2015, 07:36:05 am »

Hi,
Does anyone know the British Standard colour scheme for a 1980's lifeboat?

I think you would have to give a date and name of vessel as the were lots of changes going on at that time.
If you can supply the details, I'm sure one of our lifeboat gurus will help

Colours have been discussed on many of the Lifeboat builds on the forum,I would suggest you have a look under the "Lifeboats Section" and I am sure you will find what you need there? Some interesting building too!

These are the listed colours used in lifeboats of the RNLI

Lifeboats Blue      BS 381c Oxford Blue 105

Lifeboats Yellow      BS 381c Bold Yellow 363

Lifeboats Red      BS 381c Signal Red 537

Lifeboats Orange      BS 381c Orange 557

Lifeboats Grey      BS 381c Light Aircraft Grey 627

Grey for Non-Slip Deck   BS 381c Dark Admiralty Grey 632

The exact combination used on the boat depends upon the period you are modelling.  Early boats had blue hulls, grey superstructures, red fenders, then the tops had orange patches then full orange tops. As time passed the more modern boats had blue hulls with a single red band then blue with a red and yellow band. So make csure you have a decent picture to ensure you get it right or many ex-RNLI crew will nail you to the mast for sacriledge!! {-) {-) {-)

There is a colour photo of City of Birmingham on the Walton Lifeboat website
She was stationed there from 83 and has an orange superstructure.

The orange in those days was called "Samoan Sun" I know not the code. I was given half a tin by the Tynemouth mechanic.Nemesis
