other hobbies always wondered ?

[cAlwayswondered? why so many people just stay with model boats and not like us as some others on this site get a real one ? plus models too? ?! The cost of inland waterways boats in thic country is not enormous ie? to buy ?500? to whatever?50000? moorings come between ? 300 to inshore ?1000 annually . insurance = ?200 +river lincenses ?200? -?300? if fact about the same as runniing a car and doing average mileage We have had many negitive comments some from model boaters but it has become our home from home and I really think that is instead of being critical <or jealous some of these landlubber modellers should get on thew real thing or go on a friends and become real sailors for a little while !! r=Purple][/color]

I enjoy building and sailing my models. I have no desire to part with about 1kPA to do the same thing with the 12 inch to the foot size. I enjoy scale steering competitions and I have never seen one for the full size version.

I live in Gloucester which has a resonable docks, and with it the usual level of vandles, hassle I could well do without, along with the inflated car parking charges in the docks area. I know a few people who own boats moored at Gloucester and other marinas, they enjoy their hobby or in some case home. I enjoy mine and as a rule everyone respects each other and generally gets along with each other. I have not come accross any sign of jealousy between boaters and modelers, quite the opposite. I have come accross several instancies of boaters beeing more than helpful when it comes to owners of boats showing modelers around their craft when the modeler either has a minature version or is building one.

I've often wondered why people get 12" to the foot boats and then spend all weekend moored to the bank outside a pub with an enormous car park, next to dual carriage way.  ???

Chaco son gou  _  I suppose

Hi,
I also enjoy full size sailing, having a 22ft sailboat on the lakes. I am also building a 10ft sailing dinghy!

I first went on a narrow boat holiday some 29 years ago. On the third day I was cruising up the Trent and Mersey close along side the A38 (big dual carriage way) and remarked to SWMBO about the idiots flying along at 70mph plus. ??? ??? ???

That was you last Friday was the reply and I suddenly realised how laid back I had become in three short days. Needless to say I still use narrow boat holidays as relaxation therapy. Pub to Pub no breathaliser, and row locks to the world. ;D ;D ;D

I can only do this ocasionally and so I take my model to the pond (no pub) but after a few minutes the world still goes away.

I have fouind that building to a scale of 12 inches to the foot is more expensive than 1/48.

Obvously, those who decry the 12" to a foot sailors, have never experienced the joy of a quiet anchorage, a bottle of wine and the sunset. No phones, mobile or otherwise, just pure solitude.
As for vandals, one was caught, and somehow he fell in the dock, and just could not climb onto the pontoon tyo get out, till the police arrived with their usual promptitude.
Funny, there is not much vadalism of the boats at Exmouth.
Seriously, model boats led me to model design, which led me to enter a full size design for a competiton, which led me to build a sailing dinghy, which led me to Exmouth from Surrey some ten years ago, which led me to cruising, which led me back to model boats.

Motto:
Nothing you do in life is wasted, if you set out to enjoy yourself.

Dead right Peter. Full size yachting is episodes of bliss like this punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Keeps you awake anyway.

Reading the last two posts, doesnt half bring back some happy memories...I come from a boat-building and fishing family in small boats up to 40 footers.? One of the treasured memories I have is lying six mile off land at anchor watching the sun rise and the peace and quiet. Smell of the meths and primus stove and the cheese sandwich.? Fishing with me dad.? No hassle.? Oh, to turn back the clock.

as an afterthought - forgot about - blisters on the hands, stings all over me hands and arms from jelly fish when pulling the ropes in - soaking wet ALL THE WAY THROUGH - and ah yes, the time we brought a lad in quick - he fell backwards onto some fishing hooks OWCH hey he had to be whipped to hospital quick rectum it killed im  ;D we wanted to cut the barbs off and pull the hooks through. ;D ;D ;D

A kindred spirit, Colin. I forget about last year's wine run to Cherborg.

We left Exmouth at seven in the evening, gusting 6, with a moderating forecast. It did, but not before, it blew force 8 for four hours, dead on the nose, we could'nt get near Brixham to shelter, we just had to sit in the lee of Berry head, and keep afloat.

But we had a cracking sail back from Alderney.

That was on a Friends, 36ft Moody. Thank the heavens it was not my little 22ft baby.

So on that theory, if I was to make model subs, should I also have a real one? Or fly model aircraft should I have a Private Pilots Licence?
All hobbies are what an individual is interested in. It certainly doesnt interest me to be aboard a vessel I would consider to be a lifeboat without my Steward, Cook, and the comforts of a slightly bigger ship.
To me you are just caravanners that sail on the water!!
I have seen some really stupid actions carried out by private "sailors" and some that should know better.
Yes I know there are good and bad in all hobbies, but you do tend to remember the idiots.
If you WANT to be a WAFI (Wind Assisted Flaming Idiot) that is your choice, but dont in any way or form try and encourage me to join.

I read this forum thread with interest having had 12" to the foot & also model boats, For me, the cost of owning a full size is now beyond the 'feel good' factor due to all the extra costs that come with full size boats.

Do I also hear creeping in, the old 'Model Boat Forum' way of thinking? You know the thing, 'because I have no interest in it It can't be any good' come on guys, If we all liked the same thing we would all be sailing Wyeforce tugs all in the same colour, all on the same frequency! Accept that folks have different interests, If you don't like what other folk do, fine, just let them get on with it rather than putting them down 'cos you dont understand it'
Happy boating 8)

I think, if you read all the messages on this and the original thread, you'll find that thust is not misunderstanding/disliking other peoples' pastimes but why don't you all come and join me in mine (the original poster that is). I also think it was maybe done a little togue in cheek to see what reaction was achieved.

Lets all be friends and be glad we have the choice  :)

I've been watching this string and had many memories brought back of my long yachting years. I learned very early on that a person who had gone through the `theory` of the RYA yachtmaster certificate and was in the process of sea time milage etc, they were the ones, the people I came across and they were many, I wouldn't trust them with my 8 ft dinghy. I could tell you stories that would make your toes turn up :D. Now I'm not saying all YRA certificate holders are like that, but the % is quite high. I was once on a yacht returning from a cruise to the Baltic to Southampton and we were heading for a port in the Frisian Isles in `humpy` weather and very dark when we heard a May Day call and we were quite close to the person in distress, He'd gone aground. Our skipper who was one of the RYA holders told his wife who was also a `holder` to "Switch off the VHS, that's a job for the coast guard!"
There were 6 of us on board and I was the only one who wasn't a `holder` though I did have the `off shore cert` and I was shouted down when I protested. Oh there's more experiences with these types but I'll not bore you any longer  ::) though I can say they are usually very nervous people to be around in a blow.

Always had a passion for boats - I would love to own a real one - full size, all I've ever owned is canoes, but sailed within a club a lot as a teenager. trouble is the wife is not that en-amoured with the thought of boats (or caravans / tents / chalets) running through her like a chill. But one day........I just need the six right numbers. Even her name is stuck in my head "Sorry Kids"

I'd like a boat on a canal or river, I could quite happilysettle on the Weaver in Cheshire for a few weeks ever now and then. :)
