Beginner Model kits for Kids? Recommendation Please
« on: April 06, 2015, 04:24:49 pm »

My kids aged 7 and 10 want me to buy them model boats to use in dock. They have had the RTR models that stop working when water gets in them before. So this time I want to get proper kits that they can build or help build themselves. So I am thinking of an ABS kit with CNC parts preferably, that will be quick to put together Not too many fittings that can break off. I have radio gear already. Going to be use in an open dock so the water can get rougher than a typical pond or lake. so I was thinking around the 2 foot or bigger mark.
I my first thought was a Robbe kit, but most models seem to have vanished and the ones that are left are north of £100. Any recommendation on where to look? The cheaper the better, the easier to build the better.
Cheers

Build a couple of springers
There is the Aeronaut Ramborator kit wood
Andy Griggs does a f/glass hull and other bits for a reasonable price.
Two of these and a football and they will love it

hi there

Have you thought about looking on My Hobbies Store - the plans section - cos in amongst the plans there are 1 or 2 Glyn Guest's plans with a wood pack to go with the plan.

I am unsure whether the wood is cut out though or marked with guidelines.

Anyway,  they are a bit on the expensive side but I would think it would be a good place for a beginner to start the hobby with guidance from someone such as your goodself.

The other thing I was thinking of was Dodgygeezers website - KK EEzeBilt boats - this website has all the old KielKraft easy build boats plans for free download and there are also new additions of plans by the man himself, but, bear in mind these are all just downloadable free plans.

They take a bit of working out, which no doubt you could do, to help the youngsters on their way - but it may be best to stick to the very easy ones like the KeilKraft tug and the MTB which are quite straight forward and easy to build.    I am building one myself which is from Dodgygeezers plans and its the Fireboat :-) It is taking a bit of working out.

Here are a couple of links.

Not sure if the Aeronaut kits are available somewhere in the UK.

The mahogany boats like "Classic" "Diva" ... are pretty easy to build, look good and can go fast (or very fast if you put brushless and lipo inside).
The last thing is most important for the young  {-) That´s what I learned from my nephew.

What about a couple of club 500's. They come in different colours and a few different styles based on a single hull design. They can be quick and used in gentle competition when used flat out. These are easily put together and are an ideal introduction.

hi there, I have just been looking around for another set of plans and I came across these, I forgot about Marine Modelling plans - although this is a bit expensive, it looks good for what you get.   Have a look.

Or the most obvious, if you still have the RTR's, convert them and fit them out with proper running gear etc and redo the deck to suit heavy seas.

Thanks for the tips guys. The Hunter kits look great but I fear will be a little on the small side. I think building from plans will be more work than I want to invest at the moment, but definately the way to go when hey are a little older. The Aeronautics Springer is most promising.

Do a top quality Mercedes Sprinter - then call it 'white tug man' churning up the water lanes and cutting up people when least expected, also inappropraitly parking it  {-)
