Wide a Wake
« on: May 19, 2015, 10:01:54 pm »

Hello!
I would like to know , who designed the Wide a Wake as a Model Boat, and when?
I red somewhere that it was originally designed by Stuart Turner for its D10.
But what is the real story???
Thanks for your help. :-)

Hello

A series of articles on Wide a Wake were published in Model Boats starting in the Feb 1972 edition. Designed by H.Croker from South Australia. It is a really good construction series and I never understood why MB never offered the plans for sale. I have scanned copies of all the articles and if you care to PM me I'll send you a set.

Hello!
Thanks  a lot for your quick answer Malcombeak.
We can do that ! I'd like to know the complete story for my own forum.
But I imagine that some plans/drawings are available as a lot of people did build it.
Pattern Maker being among the best of them.
Kind regards. ok2

KBIO - Your question and interest in this model is somewhat topical for me   :-)

As Malcolm says the boat was first featured in the Feb 1972 issue with the second and third parts in the March and April issues. The drawings are featured on one page with the relevant lines shown scaled down. There is also a table of offsets in the first issue with an amendment to the odd error in them in the second issue

At the time in 1972 I was having a diversion into model boats from aeromodelling and was absolutely smitten by this enchanting model. It had a profound effect on my modelling outlook and and was the catalyst for the lifetime of model engineering to follow. I set out to acquire the means to make one in 1972 but it has taken 43 years to actually achieve it!

The plunge was finally taken about eighteen months ago and the full build with over 250 pics has been described on the 'Model Engine Maker' forum - there's not enough time to do it twice I'm afraid and what time is spent on a forum is spent there. I intended to post here when it was completely finished but as this post is so relevant thought I would mention it now.

The hull is complete and ready to take the engine. Ideally the engine, though perfectly serviceable, is old and could really do with a rebuild. The boiler, made in 1972 has been completely rebuilt and tested but there are still several items to make before the engine bay is complete - the pumps, gas regulator, separator, relevant plumbing and servo installation for throttle and reversing.

I'm putting it on hold for a few months however as I've had a good session on it for several months and am now feeling a bit tired - time for break and come back to it fresh later in the year.

This is a week or two back whilst varnishing was in progress -

Varnishing complete and 'anti-fouling' on

A big moment was fitting the prop - an original Stuart and Turner cast prop it's been waiting for 43 years for that moment  %)

Hope that's of interest to anyone with a love of this lovely old design

Thanks KBIO

Allan - The hull planks were cut from a piece of Parana pine that I've kept for it for 30 odd years. It was a bit dry for clinker planking but with steaming did not cause any problems. I particularly wanted to yet that yellow hue it gives off.

The deck planks are from lime bought recently with the caulking from thick black (paper) card.
