BBC TV
« on: June 01, 2015, 12:52:27 pm »

Came home from shopping this morning to find an email from a BBC TV crew.

They want to chat to me about my model lifeboat builds and my inspiration behind them......

for the first time in my life I have become camera shy and rather modest, lol %% %% %%

Make sure you have a long spoon. TV companies/producers insist on doing things their way to meet their own preconceived agendas and the result could be something rather different to what you are led to expect, and not for the better! You are unlikely to have any degree of control over the final product.

ok2 As Colin says best kept at a distance, having had a couple of brushes with the media, what was filmed and said and what appeared on the box were completely different I know they have to edit but what they did put out was worlds apart from what we saw, they do this just to make a story bigger than what it was,Ray >:-o >:-o

Ask them what they are prepared to pay you for your time and, no doubt, the power they will use for lights etc. If they refuse tell them to get lost, don't do it just to enhance your ego or any of that "advancing the interest of model boating" rubbish. Remember, they are a business just like any other, and you want your whack.

If they are really serious they will pay you - Channel Four paid me £100 just to use my front garden a couple of years ago.

LB

PS I nearly forgot - get a contract off them and make sure it spells out EXACTLY what they are going to do and how they are going to use the footage.

Also, you don't have to anything against your sensibilities just because they say it makes "good TV!"

That isn't really the point Martin, it's the way they edit the material which often causes the damage, not to mention the voiceover which is added during the process 'a lovely example of work by this eccentric toy boat builder' etc. An awful lot of people have come unstuck in this way. It can be done right such as the Vic Smeed/Bob Symes TV series of yesteryear but these days don't expect too much. The producer will already know what they want, right or wrong, and the piece will be made to reflect that. A lot of what we might consider to be fundamental to the 'story' will simply end up on the cutting room floor.

Good sense says run a mile from a TV crew.
Unfortunately the amount of desire for 15 minutes of 'fame' generally exceeds the available good sense.

The old adage, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story" comes to mind.

I think, rather than take my story, which they haven't done yet...........they should bunch all you lot together and make another series of programmes called GRUMPY OLD MODELLERS.

I have never heard such a bunch of old gits wharbling on about absolutely nothing for such a long time in my life.

the BEEB haven't even taken my story yet and you are all convinced that they have got it wrong with their own fabricated stories of woe............no wonder modellers get a name for themselves as miserable old gits.............

this was posted as a bit of fun, but after listening to you lot of saddoes, I feel damned near suicidal. lol <:( <:( <:(...........thank gawd I have a life outside mayhem.  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

if you don't have any light hearted comments to make, please don't comment at all................I'm sick of all the doom and gloom mongerers {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(

Sheel be right Jack [Neil]  %)......

Just holla & we will send a delegation of OZ didgeridoo players to provide background music like the thundering sounds of the sea and the swarking of the gulls as they skim just above the crests of the waves :-)) ....

Should make a good aural backdrop for any serious nautical production {-)........Derek

Sorry Neil.......things are a bit tough in OZ at the moment  <:(...so could you please confirm your MasterCard number so I can book our flights  O0

We need  ok2

4 x baggage class seats... for the individual didgeridoo players
2 x business class seats... for the cultural attaché & her assistant
2 x business class seats... for the musical director & the didgeridoo tuner
1 x first class seat... for the ensemble manager  = me........... O0

We would of course also need to use your Credit Card for humble lodgings & food for all whilst in the UK

Could you please suggest a reasonably reasonable venue?......I have it on good report that the 'Savaloy' Hotel in London is OK  :o...have you ever stayed there?....do they have any OZ beers on tap?

My conservative estimate of costs to provide the OZ musical background for your nautical documentary is approx. $65K  {-)... so just mention this in passing to your BBC people..........Derek...............
