Pulley help, please..
« on: July 02, 2015, 10:53:59 am »

Chaps, I'm in need of a couple of pulley wheels for my sternwheeler paddle ferry...I need a pulley to fit a 385 motor and one for the paddle shaft....any ideas as to where I can get a set, please? I hunted through eBay, but that place is so confusing now, I gave up.

What size are your axles?
What ratio do you need?
Do you need a belt?

Small one needs to fit a 383 shaft, not sure on the pulley shaft until the paddle wheels arrive.

What ratio do you need?

Don't know as yet...

Do you need a belt?

Yes, will be needing a belt...

Thanks Martin...

Are you driving straight off of a 385 motor ( shaft size 3/32" 2.3mm :-) ) to the paddles? Ideally you want somewhere between 120 and 200RPM at the paddle, a 385 without gearbox is going to be in the low to mid thousands at 6v or 7.2v, could have a bit of a rooster tail behind the boat!
You might get away with a very small pulley on the motor and a very big pulley at the paddle though..

This is new territory to me, skip...apart from the PBM paddler I built years ago, I've never had anything to do with paddlers, let alone sternwheelers. I wondered if a 385 might be a bit too potent for the boat, but I can always drop the cell pack down to 4.8v if needs be. And use a light thumb on the throttle stick...

Just off the top of my head, 4.8v and at least a 6:1 ratio, if not a bit more, might be a good place to start.

Rich, would one of those old Marx motor's with a Pile gearbox not work?
You can run them from 3:1 down to 360:1, that should be slow enough?

And I just happen to know where there is a brand new one with a spare new gearbox still in it's box.
Sat in my spares box  {-)

Those Marx pile drives are noisy little rascals mind.

I've always liked paddlers when they're whisper quiet and all you can hear the is whomping of the paddles in the water.

The only way you'll get that however is with belts, and you would need a very low revving motor with at least two stages of belt reduction.

Hello U33.
A number of years ago I built a model of the Creole Queen by Dumas and encountered a similar problem, I used the pulley drives supplied by SHG Models, if you talk to them they will prepare the pulleys to your requirement, I also used the toothed pulley and belt on my model of an Isle of Man steam Packet vessel to operate the bow rudder, both items work well.
I have no connection with the company but have always had very good help, good luck with your venture.

I have mounted a Tamiya planetary gearbox to the end of a 380 motor before today. It offers a huge range of reductions, and seemed bullet proof. I haven't broken it yet.

Thanks Andy, Howard and Boman...I'll try that motor of Ian's and see how we get on...this is all totally new ground to me, so it's a real 'suck it and see' job.
