my other hobbies
« on: August 11, 2015, 09:37:25 am »

Oh its nice to see what else you guys are doing. its always great to see grown-ups "play".

I'm a doll maker, a writer and a baby-knit designer. So my interest for ships and modelships landed in a whole other masculine category which often surprises people I meet.

I think if one has a craft 'bent' that the hand skills and an eye for the look can transfer into many different things.

I think you're right about that, Jerry,  then its just a question about where the interest lies.

A belated welcome to the forum.  You are not alone in being a lady boat modeller on Mayhem (and various American sites) , we have the esteemed Umi who contributes from the USA.  Can I ask  where in Denmark you live? North or south will do.  On another site there is a discussion about small inter-island car ferries, are you familiar with any in your area.

Arrow,
thank you.

I'm in the south of Denmark, on a small island, half an hour's drive from Germany, and yes we have ferries to two other islands from here, but to get to the mainland, we have two bridges. We have an absolutely beautiful harbor site here, but nowhere to play with rc ships. we need to go to another city an hour's drive away for that...

Discovery Channel Deadliest Catch

Again Welcome  :-))

Thanks Ned ...and sorry ladies, bad me for forgetting :embarrassed:    Karina good, on an island !    I`m interested on the ferries. I presume they are the smaller car carrying ones. Can you post some pictures ?   There is a kit manufacturer thinking of kitting some. I have sent him some ideas with photos from the web but he might be interested in more detailed ideas from Europe. Barracuda Model Boats is the company     On  www.RCGroups.com  in the Scale Boats section there is a thread ,  18" car carrier tug. The kit man is f15pilot. Picture is of typical smallish car ferry of the type.

well, I don't own any photos of the ferries, and there's a rule here on not posting photos we don't own the copyright to . But I can tell you the names of the ferries:

Najaden - goes between Als and Funen,

the OLD ferry between Als and Ærø was the Mommark-Søby (Mommark-Soeby) - it was cancelled in 2009 I think, and now there's a larger ferry, just named "Øen" (Oen) (means "the island") and it goes from the same port as the one to Funen because its larger than the old one.

I hope this helps.

Very helpful , thanks.   The ferry in my picture is a bit bigger than the smaller inter-island ones that f15pilot is planning I think but isn't to be confused with the  cruise-ferry type of massive ferries. Pity you don't have a place to sail on the island, is it rocky with no beaches ?   Salt water isn't too bad to sail on if you wash the boats after with fresh water.

Actually we have beach all around the island, more or less - but there are rules around where we can do what and what not, but I'm going to contact the harbor office to see if it could be allowed to sail at the area for surfers, speedboats and waterschooters, since that part of the beach never is being used by any of those. there's a nice floating bridge there as well which would be a great place to put the ship out from.

It's funny how the authorities handle models sometimes. A friend in my club was running a big rc powerboat is a designated watersports area near me, OK he was doing seventy miles an hour, but the river police objected, not because of the speed, but because it was distracting drivers on a nearby road!  {:-{

Well in fairness the road runs alongside the waterway for around half a mile, and at high tides you are only a few metres above the height of the water. So I guess a lone small boat throwing up a 5 metre high rooster tail travelling twice the speed of the cars may have attracted careless drivers perhaps. Whether it was entirely legal I can't say, it was some time ago and I was not there, its in the folk lore of the club from before it was formed.

oh yes I think you have a good point there.

but one would also think that the inner child in both men and women might make them look sideways to look at the boats instead of keeping their eyes on the road  ok2
