Connecting motor to prop shaft !!!
« on: August 17, 2015, 11:22:49 am »

The latest way of fitting a connection joint between the motor and the prop shaft seems to be a  'push fit'  rubber tube.  These have the advantage of being smooth and rattle free.

What to people recommend for the type of rubber to use please ? , and also where to get it from  ??       Obviously they have to be very flexible but on the other hand be  'long lasting'.  Are there suppliers out there or would you recommend cutting your own from a certain product.

I have seen similar to the huco coupling but instead of the solid bearing and pins, the two halves were joined  with a rubber block that absorbs the noise and vibration. I'll see if I can find the link again.

The rubber tubing I was referring to goes between the motor shaft and the prop shaft.  There are no mechanical connections or grub screws involved at all as it's a tight fit onto the two shafts. When under drive, the rubber self tightens and produces a good grip.

I have seen your idea Brian but prefer the simple push tube. It will be used on the Schottle drives in my latest craft and not be subjected to undue forces or high revving.

The advantage of this system is that it allows for silent running  and vibration free movement.  The speeds are usually low, so extreme forces do not affect it.  I have used  'sturdy'  rubber from  Mark's Model Boats in the past but felt it wasn't flexible or thin enough for this particular system.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Klunk.  I was aware of these but they involve metal ends and pins at 6 quid a go.

All I want is a suitable rubber type material to cut to length and push fit onto the shafts.  ( cheapskate me.   %)  )

Don't know what diameter shaft you're using but I've used this with success.

I use silicone rubber tubing for my plastic kit conversions to connect motors to shafts. Try these people:

Try these guys. Good range of sizes and not hugely expensive. https://www.polymax.co.uk/silicone/silicone-tubing

I think this is what you are referring to. SHG also used to some - slightly larger ID and orange.

Try Calor Gas tubing, like the hose on Plumbers Blow Torches and Gas Bottles.

Silicon tube is the answer.   :-))

Thanks for all your help.  This is what I'm after.

Cheers
